If my hard drive is constanly making a ticking sound, or constantly making a sound like it is being read, but is not in use, should I be worried?

Its a 60GB 7200 RPM Maxtor

By "not in use" do you mean the hard drive use light isn't blinking or you're not using it?
1. the little green 'can' light isn't the hard drive light it's the CPU light IIRC, the hard drive light is on the bottom of the actual hard drive.
2. is your computer doing things behind your back perhaps?

no, the red light isnt coming on. That's why I'm worried.

while the sound is similar to when its being read, its more faint.

My computer never does things behind my back ;)

<--edit.-->

I did some inspection and found that it was just the fan rattling around. I kicked my computer and it stopped.

That never worked for my box... :mad: In fact, it usually only gets worse.

A cotton swab will work for your CPU fan. For a case fan you might be able to access it directly or else some compressed air will blow some of it away.

Nah, what I did was change a CPU fan and it has shut up since. :)
