Is the default firewall provided with MS Windows XP any good? I'm not too keen on having to buy a hardware firewall.. or buy a decent software firewall.

Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/application;JSESSIONID_ZL_STORE_COMMERCE=2jMKrjeK1vt1rt5vkb0 s2eV4s6hDD1H0qYYl4MKbp9iwXrERv1tP!793892385!173109956!7511!7 512?namespace=zls_main&origin=global.jsp&event=link.skuList&&zl_catalog_view_id=201&lid=nav_db)
has a free download (at the bottom of the page)...i don't know if its a complete firewall, per se, but its free and it prompts you to allow access for all incoming traffic

I recommend Agnitum Outpost, I've had it for a while and it doesn't bug you. It also has this nice little ad blocker.

It isn't just trojans you need to worry about...the way the internet is these days, you need as much protection as you can get, Antivirus software, frequently updated, firewall

http://www.sygate.com has a great Personal Firewall that's free. (I prefer it over ZoneAlarm) :cool:

As long as the firewall is set up correctly, blocking the correct ports, Windows XP's firewall would be just as good as any other.

Not really. There are still ways of getting in. I won't post them, since it will be illegal to do so (Home Secuirty Act). But Sygate is one of the best free firewalls out there. But a linuc box setup as a firwall is always the best.
