Just curious as to your feelings when it was approaching, plans you made etc. I have one getting closer by the minute! The phrase "fear of the unknown" springs to mind :cry2:

For those who don't know, I am in Darwin as per this map.

Are you decently prepared for it Jan? I imagine you could probably never be fully prepared for such a thing, but have you made everything as to ensure as little amount as damage to anything as possible?

I don't know, I've never really been through this before, but I gotta believe that you'll probably come out of this just fine.

Yes blank, Darwin has good preparation for this likely event. The cyclone shelter is about 100 metres from me, I have stocked up on candles and non cookable food (well enough for two days anyway. There was a news report just now from Melville Island (where the core is just passing through now) and only residents in non brick housing have needed to go to shelters. It is veering away from Darwin at present, but with cyclones you never know when they will change course.

If you check that URL in say six hours and it is a category 3..call me :biggrin2: (hopefully I will be sleeping)

time to break out the duct tape and plastic wrap.

back in december I was in New Orleans and there were tornado warnings and things were pretty stormyno big deal though... I actually wanted one to hit so i could experience it.

I cant say i've been in the same situation as you, though.

I'l be sure to call you, regardless of what happens, Jan. :D

It is now a Category 2. Wasn't it a Category 1 last night, Jan? Are you still under threat? I missed the news. Take care of yourself!

Yes is was category 1 last night and we are certainly still under threat. Hopefully once it passes through Melville island it will lose some intensity. Next update is due pretty soon. If it keeps following the same track we will be out of the worst danger. Schools will be closed tomorrow. It is expected to reach the mainland at 9am tomorrow, so hopefully I can sleep all night :p

It has been very windy, but so far no power outages, Melville Island is without power though. :(

Latest update, it is moving eastward so I can at least sleep easy tonight :) So long as no trees come crashing down, or coconuts fall on my roof :devious2:

The DESTRUCTIVE core of TROPICAL CYCLONE CRAIG is currently affecting northern parts of MELVILLE ISLAND. It is expected to cross the mainland coast near POINT STUART on Tuesday afternoon.

DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts to 130 kilometres per hour should continue to affect parts of MELVILLE ISLAND overnight. GALES with gusts to 110 kilometres per hour are expected to develop on the mainland coast, including DARWIN, overnight, and may extend further east to ELCHO ISLAND late on Tuesday. GALES
may also develop in coastal and island communities between ELCHO ISLAND and PORT MCARTHUR, including NHULUNBUY and GROOTE EYLANDT, during Wednesday.

Night all, it has been a long day

Darn! Looks like I need a new host :devious2:

The cyclone is moving well away from the populated areas for now, lets hope it stays that way :)

When I still lived in Louisiana I experienced what it's like to be in a weak hurricane (forgot what the hurricane was called). It still ripped the top off of the cistern and threw it against the side of our house, denting the siding, took a few metal sheets off of the roof of the barn (used for storage, not livestock or whatever the hell farmers put in them), and knocked a large tree over in our yard.

The good part was school was out for like 4 days. :biggrin2:

I was about to be carried off by the wind, but I stood my ground, thinking about tantoc posting irrelevancy at freewebspace. Thankfully I was saved :devious2:

I think she braved all the wind and storm and everything with the intention of hanging on to not only delete your irrelevant posts, but to rename you to tantoc as well. Quite shrewd, I must say.:devious2:
