Hello,
Just wondering has anyone got natural selection? Or if you just have half life and your interested in downloading NS.
Anyhow. Just say if you have and also you location. I'm just install natural selection on a server with red hat linux 7.3 and want to test it. Its located in New Jersey on a GIG-e to InterNAP.

Hey,
Its a free game mod for HL.
A good place to look is:
http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/
It includes a 'newbie' forum which could help and has screenshots.

Could you guys post traceroutes you get to the following IP: 66.78.45.251
We will then be able to see if using my server for your gaming is viable or not.
Post your traceroutes.
If you don't know how to do it say so and include your OS type and version and i'll post simple and easy to follow instructions for you.

No problem.
I was getting a constant 550kb/s while using the server to download some files I need.
I'm just waiting to have my VPS upgraded as i've run out of space. :o
Edited:
Just downloading it onto the server myself and getting 679kb/s pretty constant.

And single player is just half life but with pretty sounds

March 11th, 2003, 06:47
Hello,
Its a multiplayer game not for single player usage. There is an option to have bots on a LAN server as an addon and you can filter the server list to show NS servers only.
NS is a team game.
There are Aliens and Marines.
Aliens have builders called Gorges who can build structures and heal and build hives.
Marines have a commander who can drop things for marines to build or give ammo or weapons or so on.
I suggest reading the forums for more information on it. Good newbie forums. :)

Just to 'prove' that this server actually 'exists'.

Also, see i'm not 'faking' the existane of this VPS.
Okay. It seems I have some free space... but I never had that free space before and my limit hasn't been upgraded :confused2
I'm going to try and install HL now.

Its a custom designed VPS i'm beta testing. The kernel is custom developed for this usage. There are issues which need to be sorted. At the moment i'm having issues installing the HL server.
tar: hlds_l/valve/halflife.wad: Wrote only 3584 of 10240 bytes
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
I'm troubleshooting this issue right now and will try to solve it as soon as possible and get this baby working.
Edit: I believe I have ran out of disk space. So, i'm going to get my space upgraded if possible. I'm looking into it.

Call it Natural Selection.

Hey,
I'm only a sales rep when I offer those. We both know that.
Okay. The problem seems to be with the /home 'directory' I presume its a partiton but i'm going to have to ask about that. If it is I will get more space and change the partition size if possible. I'm not too sure how the VPS works per say but I will fix this issue asap.
Its really good connectivity though and should be good for gaming once I get this issues sorted.
By the way Daniel do you still need a CS server? I could install that too.
Edit: The disk space issue is being resolved and I will post once it has been resolved.

March 12th, 2003, 10:15
Hello,
Okay here is the latest.
I have found out that the only partition is '/' which is currently 1.0G big and 91% used. I 'asked' to get my 'vds' upgraded. Which has not happend as of yet. Once I get my vds upgraded to a size where by I can install HL and NS easily without ran out of disk space errors I shall start to do so and then post the IP for you guys to connect to with information. I shall also install AdminMOD and will be testing the performance of the server while playing different maps and it would be good if you could help that. There will be no adverts on the server and the limit of 'active' players will be 16 I think with 2 slots reserve for admins.
I shall probably give Daniel admin level as he is trustworthly and knows quite abit about HL and admin commands as far as I know.
Anyhow, any suggestions? anyone use NS currently?

NS forums won't send me activation! Grrr
I'm new to NS, where to start?
Also, what is the point of comm, how do you know where to point people? I want to learn how to comm, ect..
MN-Carl
March 12th, 2003, 11:46
Hello,
The point of comm is that he/she has the 'lead' the marines and 'advise' them. He/she must also 'drop' structures down to be build by marines. I'm a pretty damn good comm now but its been a looonnnngggg journey and I have screwed up many times before I become as good as I am now. :p many many times. :biggrin2:
I suggest not comming for about 2-4 weeks and just be a marine and be a comm's helper so to speak as much as possible. You will learn so much. Also, don't gorge for about the same amount of time. Be a gorge guarder and watch what he does while protecting him from pesky marines.

Hey,
Its back it. Must have been a minor issue.
I shall be closing down HL for a bit while I perform maintainence on the server and edit some configuration files. I shall be changing the current "stuck" program to move within 2 seconds instead of the current 10.

Hey,
Yes. I'm getting <210 pings now. I wont be able to test the game and changes made for a bit. I'll try and make time for a couple of minutes to see if the 2 second rule now applies.
Edit: I had a quick look to test the /stuck plugin. It does move you if you are not moving and stuck within 2 seconds. Pings are really good now and the server is very smooth. No doubt there will be new issues to fixed once I install new plugins in time.

Actually, we only got 2 servers now.
1 east(Carl's), 1 west(my UCG server, no one plays on it).
If you want, I can let you use my west server if you want it.

Hey,
no... not actual space --> resources. NS takes up $hit loads of resources. I'm only using a VDS remember --> Not dedicated. I have a 24 player NS server and 18 player CS server. Enough is enough :) I may have to reduce my NS server down a bit due to some lag on the 2 big maps I run... with full teams and lots of mines/grenades/acid and so forth....

Everyone will have to be connected via firewire I guess.
Only problem is that it'll be a ----- to play against someone in a different province/state.

I'm going to install it on my other server though.

It's pretty much the same concept any how.
Just won't need a powerful computer to serve as a server...but imagine how hard would it be to administrate the game.
is0lized
March 26th, 2003, 18:38
Why would it be hard?
And if you connect via lan, you don't need a server?
Daniel
March 26th, 2003, 21:11
Through firewall it'll be hard because everyone shares the game load equally...
Now with lan, you do need a central server to play on...

March 27th, 2003, 00:50
Just disable the firewall, and stop net in

For dedicated gameserver hosting, you'll need the minimum of a DUAL processor machine and loads of RAM and a server located on a low latency network.

Hmmm
Your looking at around $299/mo+ for a dual xeon 2ghz, 1-2gb ddr, 2x120gb or 2x73gb scsi, 1000gb+ transfer from rackshack. Excluding setup. :)

Yeah --> or onces willing to pay reasonable fees.
I would say the following structure would suit:
Public :
$0.50 per GB usage
150-200GB per 18 server.
$0.50 * 150 = $75/mo
$299 / 5 = $59.80
$75 + $59.80 = $134.80
Note: That depends on the game, cpu usage of the server deamon and also bandwidth usage of each user. Remember that excludes staff and any extras. :)

Unzip that into your maps directory.
Aim maps are basically maps that test your aiming ability.
They are usually very small maps and you need to aim fast and shoot to stay alive.
You will see if you play on my server. :)
