You could re-install windows, by just putting the CD in the drive, when starting up.

If this doesn't work, you should press F8 while starting up your system (before WIN98 logo apears). Then you should receive some sort of DOS-menu, and take the ms-dos option.
*put in the win98 CD*
In DOS, should go to the CD drive and run SETUP

Normaly, you don't lose your files. (Only files that windows uses will be overwritten)

I ain't sure about all that, but the last time that my PC crashed very hard, I did it that way.

good luck

Erm,

That does depend somewhat on what the CD he mentions actually is. For example, my Compaq laptop has a CD with Windows on it. It's also a recovery disk though. Putting that in won't retain my files. It does a c:\format before reinstalling windows back to 'show-room' condition.

could be, but even if akashik is right, there's a solution.

You can split up your disk with fdisk (dos program), and make an backup of your files on the created disk. That way, windows can format your C-disk, and keep an back-up on the D-disk that you created with Fdisk.

I never quite understood Window's "Safe Mode"... what's it supposed to do? (or not do?)

One thing I know for sure is that in safe mode your resolution becomes something like 640x480, really bad.

In safe mode windows load as few drivers as posible. At that way you can solve problem related to drivers.
