View Full Version : NBCI Shutdown
Victoria7

NBC is shutting down NBC Internet (http://www.nbci.com), which means that its member pages will most likely be shut down as well, since they are not continuing the site. The same has happened with Disney's Go.com recently. Here is the article from the Washington Post online:

Why are Crosswinds backstabbers? because they were sick of loosing money?

Cracker, there's a host of other free web hosts that offer member page services! (Sorry, couldn't resist the pun. :p) You could try FreeYellow/Hypermart, since it appears to be pretty good; of course, I have NO idea what you need.
Frustrating, isn't it? When these sites, like Go & NBCI, go down, they need to not DELETE members' pages, but automatically reformat them by a certain date and make them strictly redirect pages, where members can fill in their new addresses and an explanation, perhaps. That removes the problem of missing addresses and thus, missing people - if someone's site goes down and they don't know, and their address is on the site, no one can send them anything about it, unless they already know their e-mail.

No, because they once deleted my account after I complained about their hellishly slow download speeds. The way it used to be (back in January, after they went through their "upgrades"), I would attempt to download one of my large .wav files, it would go hellishly slow and would keep pausing. Eventually, my browser would give up on the file and abort the download. And when I tried to complain to Crosswinds about it, they told me that they've had enough of my complaining and had my account "cyberryan" deleted! ( http://cyberryan----------/ used to be http://www.crosswinds.net/~cyberryan/ )
As for you, Victoria7, I would use another FWP, but my site's already at 149 MB, and it's still growing, so I need an "unlimited" FWP. I really don't want to span my site over several FWP's, because then it would be hard to test my site on my own computer's hard drive.
BTW, I don't care about whether or not my Nbci URL disappears, why do you think I use http://www----------/ !? Ever since Crosswinds deleted my old account, I never again trusted anyone on the www with more than one service at once (ie, I don't trust an FWP to also hold my e-mail address and website URL).

Good!
I'm glad they're shutting down.
I read the article and can't imagine why the hell they would need so many employee's. And I can't imagine where all that money went...
Serves them right for being stupid. :)

Geez, and I always though NBCi would be the last host to shut down (after Geocities perhaps.) I guess this is the start of the end of freewebhosting.

My site is homeless again now *sigh*

It was like only 2 months ago when NBCi bought out Xoom. Now they're closing it. What a waste of money! But NBCi is rich, so it doesn't matter ;)

Crosswinds and NBCi aren't the only two web hosts out there. If you don't like Crosswinds, try someone else.

I guess it doesn't hurt to give CW another chance...but it's up to you, whatever you feel better about doing..
I must admit, though, that this news surprises me

No, they're not the only two hosts with unlimited web space. Spaceports comes to mind, and there are others.

Yeah, but 1) Spaceports has a tough way to upgrade all the way to the amount of space I currently need from a measly 20 mb, plus they're probably too chicken to host a sound archive site and 2) Clawz.com is too chicken to host a sound archive site too.

Define "sound archive site" - as long as you have permission to host the sounds you're archiving, you can host them on Spaceports. You just need to provide the staff with written permission. It has nothing to do with being "chicken", it has to do with being legal.

Well, I'd rather have it there than on the top of every one of my framed pages. If that happened, my site's navigation bars would look ugly, ugly, ugly! Yeah, that's another reason I can't use clawz.com, because they actually append the banner to every one of your .html files, so it would screw up my site's layout, and I have so many HTML pages (about 66 now), that I can't change from my frame layout without screwing up too many pages. And don't tell me to turn off scrolling in my navigation frames, because then it would take freedom away from my site's viewers!

Well, my mind's made up, back to Crosswinds my site will soon be. I just hope Nbci can hold out until I transfer it all there using Crosswinds' Homepage Utilities or until their FTP turns back on. And don't worry, I'm still going to keep my old promise never again to kiss anyone's ---, and that goes for Crosswinds as well. Also, this time around on Crosswinds, I'm not going to use their e-mail and of course, I'm still going to use my -------- website address instead of Crosswinds'.

He did? How?
Well, Cracker did do an impressive job of hiding his true identity. Although I always speculated about him being Gary Niiman, I always leaned toward him not being Gary. Well, now the case is solved!
Well, bye Cracker, see you soon.

Do I need to spell it out for ya? :)
I'm Ryan Mangin, not Gary Nimrod (he was one of my aliases, until I stopped being so chicken; all right, I've cracked again - like the cracker I am). "Gary" didn't respect a company's right to make a profit, but I do. I believe Crosswinds deserves what they are getting.

I'm telling you, I'm a totally different person who still likes Crosswinds, no matter what they do (as long as they don't limit my webspace, charge for webspace, or give away my personal information without my consent). I will NEVER put down an FWP for forcing ads or otherwise trying to make money ever again, I promise! Also, please don't refer to me as Nimrod again, because he's not real.
Take a look at the bolded text. Seems like Cracker broke his promise (just like Crosswinds) about not putting down a fwp for forcing ads or otherwise. Remember when he had some problem with CW shutting down his site and when he was still with NBCi? Geez, he was putting down CW like crazy! Now that NBCi has kicked him (and everybody else) out, he's started jeering at NBCi and saying how nice CW is. (well, not really, but you get the idea)

I remember how he used all those fake aliases on the old boards, and Ron was quick enough to find out that he was using some IP cloaking service, like spaceproxy, to disguise himself while kissing some major crosswinds ---..

NBCI is shutting down??? Man that stinks.
They were the only host that allows media files, with a decent file limit....sure they oppened up a new banner every time a new page was opened, but still..argh
all good things come to an end.

You can get aroudn with NBCi?? the XMCM or wahtever?? I dont do that, because I dont need to cheat them out...I dont mind one banner...its when i click on the next page on my site and it has 2 ADBARS. thats what pisses me off about them, but there the only host that supports most media stuff and has decent file limit (11 meg)...and as much space as you need:D
