for those of you who know a thing or two about uk value added tax, is it a good sign that a host is vat registered? i've come across a few which arent and their prices are about the same as the vat registered ones, if not lower. or perhaps it's not an indicator of a host's reliability at all?

Being VAT registered doesn't make you a better webhost.

I believe that if you are making over £50,000 a year you must be VAt registered (that maybe £50,000 a month i can't remember).

Some companies register for VAT before they make that amount some dont.

If you post the links to the UK hosts in question i'll try give you more info about the companies.

Hello
I think the VAT limit is £56,000 per year
If you are selling less than that you have to be VAT registered.

Although you can register for VAT if you are under the limit it is usually not worthwhile doing this.

VAT registration indicates that the business is of a reasonable size and capable of complying with certain accounting regulations.
You might also want to see if it is a limited company or a sole trader.
Limited companies need to comply with very strict accounting requirements and its another indication you are dealing with a serious business and not someone spart time hobby.
