..or wasn't that obvious?
---------------------------------------------------
note: we're still in the early stages of developing the hosting system, and so - at present - uploading your files via browser and shared FTP is the only possible way.
and please.. no mp3s, warez, porn, video rips or.. stuff like that ;)

digital.bath || hosting overview
fewer than two months ago, digital.bath was established on quite possibly one of the best hosts in existence, as far as we are aware. the technology offered to us was incomparable. as the space which we were allocated with upon joining is quite simply - ridiculously large - it seemed foolish not to put it to better usage than our own. within a month, resident computer guru steven burrell had our server under his belt, and consequently, we are now able to offer you - the greater public - a large proportion of what we are so grateful to have. furthermore, unlike other free providers who are still offering 200-500 MB accounts with 3000+ users on each 1.2Ghz CPU, 512 MB RAM servers, we put your account on Infinology Enterprise Servers with Dual 2200+ processors (equivalent to 4400Mhz total), with 2,048 RAM, seamlessly connected to the internet on a fiber optic backbone, with no less than 99.9% uptime.
this plan was designed to provide web developers with all the tools they need without spending a single penny¹. it comes with everything you could ever want, from full FrontPage (98, 2000 & 2002) support to PHP 3 & 4 functionability.
below is a full listing of what we offer:
ad-free hosting
FTP/FrontPage/Browser Upload
custom MIME types
Secure Server - public SSL certificate
Perl support
Shockwave support
SSI - server side includes
Flash support
CGI - custom cgi-bin
PHP 3 & 4 support
the only requirement is that you already have a website, or that you can give us an idea of your proposed one². this may seem to defeat the whole purpose of offering hosting, but this proves to us that you have the ability to construct an aesthetically pleasing website which can be beneficial to you as well as ourselves.
¹at present, we can offer up to, and quite possibly in excess of 450 MB of space. however, if we ever reach 20 customers, a fee of $5 USD/mo will be required. this said, the space allocated to you will also increase to 1.75 GB.
²if you can construct what you want your website to look like, but are unable to make the transfer from a vision to html, we can help you out. save your proposed website, even if only the main page, into a standard file format (GIF, JPG, PNG, PSD, TIF, BMP) in an appropriate resolution. if your design is approved, we'll see what we can do.
---------------------------------------------------
PLEASE NOTE: the following (paid) features are also available
subdomain (you.digital-bath.com) with dedicated FTP access - $4.00 USD/mo
additional diskspace - $0.10/MB
mySQL (setup) $11.00 then $3.00/mo

hmmm, sounds alot like this found at infinology paid hosting
http://smartconsumers.infinology.com/unixwebplansc.htm
Unlike any other provider, our Web Hosting accounts comes up to 35 Gigabytes of storage which means you have the benefit of sharing a server with very few users. Furthermore, unlike other providers who are still offering 200-500 MB Accounts with 3000+ users on each 1.2Ghz CPU, 512 MB RAM Servers, we put your account on Enterprise Servers with Dual 2200+ processors (equivalent to 4,400Mhz Total), 2,048MB RAM. All this is provided for as low as $6.95/month*!
wonder who copied who or if they are the same company... or coinsidence maybe? lol. Great plan btw.

why is this in the free hosting section? All this is free?
digital.bath
May 15th, 2003, 20:17
lmao!! we're on infinology :D.. just not that plan. and the reason it was 450 MB was because we calculated how much space we could allocate to each user if we used all of our 2,000 available subdomains.
i found the offer and i was like.. wow  and once we'd gotten the domain and all that sorted out i realised i had 9GB.. and it was.. erm.. there.. just.. there.. and not doing much else. but when we reach 2,000 - if ever - we were hoping to upgrade onto the 35GB server.. and.. that way everyones really happy. i think.
..and yes.. its all free x.O
--------------------------------------------
[nb] the introduction of the mothly fee upon reaching 2,000 users isn't because of your consumption of our available resources, but moreso the time and effort that we're going to put into the service to make it the best.. almost free.. service available. and i can imagine that the phone/internet bill will be reaching an all new high.. :( i'm still on dial-up.

shh.. we had good reason!! at the time. see.. i decided to upload a demo by one of my friends.. just to get smoe general feedback on it.. and low and behold - the next time i was checking the site there was about 12 songs added. its not my fault.. honest!!
and..
the reason we're doing this is as a.. kinda replacement for l33t.ca - they were one of our original hosts.. but they shut down due to countless dos attacks x.O.. we've got that kinda space kicking about, so why not use it?
hmm.. does anyone know how to get in contact with the two guys that ran l33t? or.. what..
*nb: 'by email' is not a valid suggestion o.O*

May 16th, 2003, 09:20
Their ISP shut them down, or it was ISP troubles. I remember. I don't think they left any contact information. I downloaded the l33tcode if you want it...
digital.bath
May 16th, 2003, 13:14
*gasp* you have the l33t code  you mean.. the account manager type one?! ill trade you.. *points to flock of sheep* you may take as many as you want.. and my firstborn daughter in exchange for that code o.O
burrell
May 16th, 2003, 16:34
masters think for a second...... l33t had their own server co-located in a central data link centre, we dont!, ie. l33t code is fairly useless to us, as we dont have control over the kernal.
besides ive already got the code... anyways... wed need a co-located server to make any use of it ...
digital.bath
May 16th, 2003, 16:55
well i didn't know that did i  nooO.. burrell - quick question - what are we doing about the mySQL issue.. the music guy got something like in excess of 2000 hits in the first month it was open.
..im actually quite scared by this.
notnamed
May 16th, 2003, 19:37
Dude, the l33t code was up for grabs when they posted the closing announcement...I just downloaded it because I thought it was interesting.
But *ahem* I could give it to you if you still want it...for a price...
Nah, I'm joking, I'd feel bad charging you for something I downloaded for free :classic2: I'll e-mail it to you if you still want it.
digital.bath
May 16th, 2003, 19:41
lol, i'm aware of that. i do actually have it.. just not on this laptop.. and in order to get it off the other.. well basically, its a pretty painful process. the battery is practically non existent and if you move it.. the thing shuts down. actually.. you can't sjut it down. if you shut it down.. you get the blue screen of death upon start up.
..i think a reinstallation of the operating system is in order.
why did i just tell everyone that? x.O

May 16th, 2003, 20:12
I have no idea but I can tell you one thing, if I was looking for free hosting I'd look very closely at you because you seem like a fun kinda guy who'd be sincere about downtime, abuse, etc :classic2:
digital.bath
May 16th, 2003, 20:30
..really - i'm touched. in all the wrong places, but how does the saying go? beggers can't be choosers? ugh..
i dont know about sincerity, but i'm blunt. are they in any way related? and some one please tell me why people are incapable of following simple instructions. you say the site has to be in english, 75% of your submissions are chinese. whats up with that? 'description of site' : 'cat' or 'i need the space' or 'im going to be using this script' do we look like geocities to you!! seriously though, out of the 18 applications we've had, we're only accepting two. limited space = picky hosts :D we just decided that.. if we're going to have a community - it might as well look good. on top of that, the people with the better designs tend to be more persistant and involved with their work, not to mention experimental - so use of the account is almost a sure thing. i mean.. our first hosted site was http://jd102.seiten.us and.. omg.. it would have been hard to say no to this one.
its so pretty o.O

I appreciate the way you operate.
China and those with limited comprehension of the english language are the things that ruin free hosts.
I appreciate the way you and Burrel are running this, and I wish you the best :)
By the way... do you offer domain hosting?

*ponders* erm.. i'll check with burrell. brb..
[elevator music]----------------------------------[click]
please hold the line..
sorry. i love those things o.O domain hosting.. aren't domains just kinda cloaking devices? because our real address is something retarded like http://d3779195.u30.infinology.com/ but some how.. some way.. we're still digital-bath.com
..imagine that..
seriously now - i'll look into it for you :D
notnamed
May 16th, 2003, 21:13
No. Full domain hosting means you have DNS servers that members can point their domain to and then when that domain is requested in the web browser, the DNS server(s) it is pointed to knows by your hosting software which pages on the server to retrieve.
And that site....WOW...I wish I got sites like that :( Except the Skip Intro shows up AFTER it's loaded :-/ I never understood when people did that. But it sounds AWESOME on my surround sound...that is by far the best sound on a website I have ever seen. Some hosts have all the luck :p

notnamed... A domain is just an alias for a website's particular IP address, to put it simply. Read RFC 1034 and 1035 if you want to get in depth :)
and sir alex... while your question was lovingly answered, mine was not. enough of this "niceness" :devious2:

May 17th, 2003, 02:45
k..., here it we can add dns domains to our subdomaisn but it is quite a painfull process, and we may require a small fee to do it :D, just j/k..., we can do it if we like you and we think very highly of you , arnt we nice ppl, but we do require fees to set up mysql databses for you, as we have to actaully pay extra for additional databases... but i think thats all..., oh and you may have to pay for addtional subdomains on your actuall account.... i think, need to discuss with masters about the payments first tho... anyways.... ummm, err,, hmmmmm.... bye ?

omg.. you've never believe what happened :( i got warned  yah.. apparently moderator jan person thingy didn't take too nicely to me saying that critisism was good.. on some one elses thread. it seems that i'm not even allowed to post as a human being anymore.. *sniffle* just because i can host and they cant *bursts into floods of tears*
anyways. i think burrell answered your question.. but to be honest.. i have no idea. i just make things look pretty :D
and you know my thing about chinese sites that i was saying earlier? i changed my first post.. saying that they had to be in english..

IMPORTANT QUESTION - yes, i do ask them on occassion
---------------------------------------------------------------------
is it possible to password protect folders within ftp itself? eg.. say on members.digital-bath.com there was a folder called _private. would it be possible to restrict access to that folder specifically? and need another password? or what.. i need help o.O
notnamed
May 17th, 2003, 19:37
Look up htaccess password protection on Google, that'll give you a better tutorial than I can.
And Gayo, I know what a domain is, but I explained what domain hosting is. I hope.
digital.bath
May 17th, 2003, 19:50
lol.. noooooO i didnt mean like that. i was talking about denying people from accessing / password protecting folders WITHIN ftp. so like.. you have two passwords - one to log on to the ftp thingymabobby and another to access a certain directory within that. mind you - i found an almost foolproof alternative.
notnamed
May 17th, 2003, 20:05
Why not just create an FTP account that only has access to one folder? :confused2: I don't think I understand you.
digital.bath
May 17th, 2003, 20:10
erm.. how.. would you do that exactly.. i mean, our host has only allocated a certain amount of sub ftp accounts to us.. which has proven to be a bit of a problem. sooO.. we're looking into altenative methods :-|
notnamed
May 17th, 2003, 20:14
If you have cPanel access, just create a FTP username with the same name as a directory. it SHOULD work.
digital.bath
May 17th, 2003, 20:20
Create resource confirmation
You are about to enable FTP sub-account.The recurrent fee for the rest of the billing period is $34.41.The recurrent fee for every subsequent billing period is $40.20.
INVOICE
RECURRENT Recurrent FTP sub-account (5/17/03 - 3/26/04) $34.41
TOTAL: $34.41
Yes, I agree with the additional charges
No, I dont want to create
pft.. that went down well.

May 17th, 2003, 20:37

o.O
What's your host again? You know, so I can avoid it...$40 for an FTP account?? I could have 4GB more bandwidth or 2GB more space for that!
digital.bath
May 17th, 2003, 20:50
..infinology..
but the thing is.. im actually really confuzzled about this.. and as proof - i just emailed tech support. see.. according to their 'additional options' advertised on the site itself, additional subdomains are charged at $3.35/mo. how that makes it to $40.20 i have no idea. i don't remember reading anything about only having a certain amount of sub ftp accounts.. i shall have to enquire into that o.O

well would you look at that.. we just got a new applicant. its nice to see that we appeal to these kind of people. oh wait.. i can't say that. jan will probably be on my back again about being prejudice. oh well.. everyone to their own.
