I've started my own web design company and obviously I want some business. I've arranged with Jewel Osco to let me advertise by the entrance of their stores and stuff (my company appeals to small businesses and professionals) but I want to try more.
What I want to do is post up flyers on street poles, kind of like the "garage sale" or "missing person" type of thing. I was just wondering, is this legal or do I need some sort of permit to do this?

Laws vary from region to region; county to county; state to state; province to provice; country to country, and city to city.
I know in some places pasting bulletins to telephone poles is illegal. I think it would be best for you to check your local laws.
A good advertising idea would be to put up your flyers on the bulletin boards in local law offices, stores, and small businesses. Try to make a deal with the post office so they will stick your flyer in all the mail boxes.
Also go to the newspapers, and local TV guides ,as well as the local public access cable channel; try to buy some adspace with the cable listings [only sometimes offered] (you know the channel that is dedicated to telling you what is on within the next hour or so)
Hope it helps :)

You could do like on that one commercial where you run onto the field of a sporting event with a sign that has your URL printed on it ;)

Thanks for your help. I live in Chicago, IL, so if anyone knows the local law here that would help me.
Also, if I wanted to check out local laws and perhaps get a permit if thats what is required, where would I go? I live quite far away from downtown, so is there any place or type of place where they give information/permits like this?

Check the government section of phonebook (blue pages where i live)
Might be worth the trip to town if it means putting up some posters make it a double purpose trip

Cool, someone else from Chicago around here... You probably need a permit if you're putting stuff up downtown or in a rich area, but other than that I don't think anyone would care... I know they have bigger problems than flyers here on the west side...
If you want a permit you'd probably want the city clerk (on LaSalle & Randolph)...

Woofcat, I live in the northern part of chicago by the suburbs (by hardwood heights, norridge, and not too far from Pack Ridge and Niles).
i live in chicago and i think the city have changed it's law 3 years ago where you need to apply for a permit to do so.
do you live in the city or suburb?
if you live in the norwood then you need to contact the city of norwood?
i think a call to the police would answer your question
