is there anywhere I can get a free SSL certificate?
freessl.com is not free.

It's like a domain name, it's impossible to get a free one. I think the charge is to verify that you're a real person or something.

The problem isn't getting a SSL certificate because you can make one yourself and it'll function just like a real one does. The only downside is that the visitor's browser will pop up a warning saying the certificate isn't signed by an authorative company and as such could be a false identity etc.

Exactly what CareBear said. You can ask your visitors to install your certificate on the first page of your site.

IPSCA will give you a free 6 month certificate. But that's more to get you interested in their service and will end up paying for their yearly certs. http://certs.ipsca.com/ (also free if its being used for an educational institution).
Otherwise, try cacert.org. It's free but the signing authority has not been accepted by the major browsers yet.:(
