well, most forums require your host to have and allow PHP and MySQL. There are some that you don't need them for, but I have never used them. PHPbb and Invision both require them. I haven't used PHPbb in a while, but I do remember how to install Invision.
Instructions for Invision:
If you know your host has PHP and MySQL, make a new folder called forums (or whatever you want it to be), then it will be www.yourdomain.com/forums. Download whatever forum software you want, and put everything in the upload directory into the forums folder on your website. Get on the internet and go to www.yourdomain.com/forums/sm_installer.php. It will guide you through the rest of the installation.
Tell me if I missed anything, I remembered as much as I could.
EDIT: www.distanthost.com is really good if you don't know how to do much because it has a lot of great features to help you out. It can install PHPbb for you (I am pretty sure about this), and the control panel has a lot of different options. I am hosting one of my domains there now.

When you download a forum software, in the zip they all contain specific instruction on how to install it.

I'll install it for you if you just want it done :classic2:
For free, of course. Donations accepted ;)
