View Full Version : Got ownership of my NAMEZERO domain! Finally!
Super8
April 18th, 2001, 23:29
Yahooo0! Got an e-mail from NameZero Plus today saying that I can finally get ownership of my domain! (paid for the NameZero plus upgrade in early January)
"You have two options for updating your contact information:
1) Include your name in Namezero's records and in the public Who-Is directory. If you choose this option, your information will be available publicly to anyone who does a "who-is" lookup on your domain name.
2) Include your name in Namezero's records but NOT update the Who-Is (your domain will be subject to Namezero's terms of Free service located at: http://www.namezero.com/support/policies/sup-pol_tos.shtml). What this means is Namezero can control the disposition of your domain name in the event of a dispute over the domain name and otherwise restrict your rights in and to your domain name. Your information will NOT be listed in the Who-Is directory and will be private."
filled out their form &...
"Your Contact Information Has Been Updated.
Your data has been updated in Namezero's database and we will submit your contact information to be the
registrant for your domain. Update of the public who-is might take 2 to 5 days."
Yahooooo! Do a little dance...make a little love..get down tonight...get down tonight!! :0) ;o) :0) ;o) ;o)

Congrats. So... at least they *do* transfer your domains after you've upgraded. Great! Now I'll just wait another coupla years until I have got a job and start earning money...

I was going to email them regarding this but no need to now!

I got the same email too.
But one question :
Are we going to be listed as the registrant only or as the admin and billing contact too ?
Because I need to change the DNS and to do so I have to transfer my domain to another registrar (I need to be the admin contact)
akersche
April 19th, 2001, 09:13
recieved the email yesterday, too. finally:-)
and _capa_ you are right that you need to transfer to be able to change DNS.
And you can do so. You have to select that your name is updated in the whois-listing.
I think you have to wait another 6 weeks until you are able to transfer your domain to another registrar.
And you should be able to, regardless weather you are admin /billing contact, cause otherewise namezero should accept the transfer. (which could take a bit longer again...)
I am gonna transfer, too. Think I will transfer to gkg.net. (Need to fax them the transfer request.)
Godaddy is cheaper... but haven't heard that much about them...
There are also registars where you don't need to fax (e.g. weblanching)

Godaddy is cheaper (8.95) I have just started using them and what can I say? They are brillant. Everything is utomated and within 2 days I got my domain setup. No hassels No B/S, nice and fast.
GKG.net I used to use, but since their is a cheaper one why not use them instead (Well that's the way I see it). Also they are ICANN approved :).

This is what namezero changes (Just Checked Mine)
Registrant = Your Name
Technical Contact = Your Name
Administrative Contact = Your Name
Billing = Namezero
That was fast!
Think Im moving to godaddy though :)

I guess you are right about godaddy. I was just unsure... cause all reasons for them was the cheap price... But if everything is automated... you don't really need a service.
What I like about gkg.net is that I could get affiliate and earn $1 per domain I refer and after that $0.5 for each year after that. But I don't know many people to transfer and most would need to change registrar anyway... (So I am afraid affiliate wouldn't work)
Does anybody know if godaddy offeres something similar. I know they offer private label... But that's expensive and only pays if you can refer a lot of people... which I can't.
I read the rules of godaddy. You need to mail or fax them the signed transfer form, too:-(
Lynks, do you know if I need to wait before I transfer my domain, when I just recieved it from Namezero?
And another question: Did Namezero extend the ownership of your domain for one year. If you took the offer, they claimed to give you an extra year...
(I registered in 23-Nov-2000. Now I got the domain for one year. (that was with the free service). So they know should extend it until 2002. Did that work???)
And when I transfer to godaddy for ~$9 I should own the domain until 2003.
Would be great if you keep me up to date with your transfer, Lynks:-)
Lynks
April 20th, 2001, 06:13
godaddy.com does not have an affiliate program, and their private label is expensive.
When you get your plus service from namezero you can transfer immediatley.
Also you are supposed to get anohter year, I have emailed them about it and waiting for a response now. I will tell ya how it goes :)

I know... I wait until they extend the period. And you get the answer... Perhaps you prefer to email me when you get response from namezero, if you think this topic is not interesting for the rest of useres here.
mailto:arno@kersche.net
And I it's still not showing my name... Guess it takes more time for my domain. (said 2-5 days)

2) who is the registrar?

I have a question. If you transfered away from Namezero, do you still have to pay the yearly $19.95 (or $24.95)?
Lynks
April 21st, 2001, 04:57
If you buy the "Plus" plan you get an extra year hideable bar etc..
If you decide to move your domain without getting the plus it costs $50
Plus costs $24.95 and you get an extra year. I think you would have to be stupid to get the transfer without the plus plan.
Lynks
LeX
April 21st, 2001, 05:08
I know that. What I'm trying to ask is wether you still have to pay the yearly payment after you've upgraded to the plus service and transferred your domain to some other registrar.
akersche
April 21st, 2001, 09:58
hi LeX,
if you transfer your domain out of a registrar, you don't have to pay there any fee anymore. BUT instead you have to pay a yearly fee at your new registrar.
(But godaddy or gkg are way cheaper!)
if you got now namezero, you would need to upgrade to namezero plus. and after that you are able to transfer out...
And Lynks did you already get a response from Namezero about the extra year we should recieve? How did you contact them... Do you still have the rules they sent stored...
Could you please post, what you sent to Namezero, so I could do that for my domain, too.
Greetings Arno

Unfortunatley I do not have a copy of the email I sent. I sent it through their form on their website. I have got no response so I might try the plus email support. I will notify you when I recieve the email here.
By the way, I think I may have a cpy of the TOS from the time I signed up, I will check and post the info here (10:55pm) now.
I will try tommorow morning as I have had a hectic day today with the recent "Slowness" of Alter.net

If they don't get back to you in any short amount of time you could always just check the whois record and see if the date the domain is registered until agrees with what you think it should be.
http://www.samspade.org for example is a good whois check, though most registrar sites will give that info in their domain search boxes if they have a 'show information' option

Ok the .com is in my name now:
Registrant: me!
Administrative: me!
Technical: me!
Billing: NameZero
But it still shows an expiry of mid-June 2001 ( 1year from when I first signed with NameZero).
NameZero still holds the .net & .org that they grabbed on their own account in Sept 2000.
Next question - how do I transfer out of NameZero?
akersche
April 22nd, 2001, 01:48
my nic-record is also just until 2001 and not 2002, as I already stated.
When you wanna transfer, you would need to doublecheck with Namezero, that they register you the other year they promised.
(I did sent en email to 'bills@NAMZERO.COM' with that issue... well guess it's gonna take some time until they answer:-(( )
Then you need to which registar you wanna transfer...
I will transfer to godaddy. You have to fill out the transfer form and fax that to them...
gkg.net is working the same way.
weblanching allows you to online transfer the domain, if faxing is a problem for you
(after you got another year from Namezero)

Well... there's something strange. They put "Record created on 21-Apr-2001" on my domain whois.
But I registered this domain on "18-aug-2000".
Does it mean that I need to wait another 6 weeks from 21-Apr-2001 before I can change the registrar ? or can I transfer it immediately if I want ?
akersche
April 22nd, 2001, 08:57
Lex, you got it now:-)
_capa_ the dates are similar at the whois of my domain.
(kersche.net)
Guess the date of record creation is set to the date, when the domain was transferd into your name... (change of ownership, cause first it did belong to Namezero).
Not sure, wheater you need to wait another six weeks. That's what I was thinking, too...
Just hope Namezero is adding the extra year soon!

akersche

_capa_ that only works when you got registered your domain with networksolutions.com.
you can transfer to them and then make changes... but they are rather expensive
_capa_
April 22nd, 2001, 12:48
akersche it seems that namezero registered our domains with Network Solutions
here's a part of the whois report of my domain :
Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC.
Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com
Name Server: ORANGE.IDIRECTIONS.COM
Name Server: GREEN.IDIRECTIONS.COM
Updated Date: 18-aug-2000
So you see the registrar is NSI..
And your domain (kersche.net) displays the same thing (except for the Update Date)
(I did a whois at http://www.betterwhois.com) because it shows the registrar name

_capa_, checked it now. you are right Namezero did register with Networksolutions.
I tried to log into my record. And it seems that I could change the billing contact to my name, too. And also the DNS settings.
But I don't mix up my record now, cause, I still want Namezero to extend my domain name for another year. Paid for it!
But anybody got an idea, if it's easy to transfer out of Networksolution? And if they would charge a transfer out fee?
Chicken
April 23rd, 2001, 01:58
Easy to 'register out' and no fee (then again this is how it *should* work, who knows with all this stuff). I won't give you my opinion on what everyone should do next time, as you probably already know it.

didn't get email back from namezero so far... like you

When you wanna make a change, you would need to e.g. confirm the email. (So they would sent you an email and you either need to reply or get further information, how you can confirm the changes)

Hi,
well this is not exactly, what you all are interested in, but it's a good sign.
I submitted sometime ago an OnlineForm at Namezero, asking them to use my Nic-Handle, I already created for registering my domain.
The answer I got is really interessting, although, we -here- already managed to find that out:-)
In Short: Domain regsitered with NetworkSolution. Got the right to change everything via NetworkSolution.
The Administrative Contact listed for your domain is the only party
authorized to make changes to your domain records. As you have upgraded
your domain's services, you are listed as the Admin Contact with the
domain's registrar Network Solutions and you will need to make the
changes with them directly.
To change your contact information such as an email address or a mailing address use their Make Changes website at:
http://www.networksolutions.com/makechanges/
If you have lost access to the email address required to make the
changes you can create and fax an authorization letter located at the
bottom of this page: http://www.networksolutions.com/makechanges/forms.html
For more information on Network Solutions policies you can choose the
HELP link on these pages or contact their staff directly through their
general telephone line from within North America at 1-800-779-1710, or
from outside North America at 703-742-4777, from Monday to Friday, 7:00
am to 9:00 pm (Eastern time).

I tried to make a little change (zip code) with the forms here http://www.networksolutions.com/makechanges/ and received an automatic reply telling me that this is not possible, here's the mail I received :
----
Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting Network Solutions, Inc., Registration Services.
The domain name you are attempting to update was registered
through WorldNIC Services and should be updated via the following
URL:
http://www.worldnic.com
You should have a password and an ISP password so you will be allowed
to make updates to this domain name record.
If you lose or forget your account number and password, simply call
WorldNIC's Customer Support at 1-888-NIC-WORLD (1-888-642-9675). Our
staff will ask you for your Domain Name, then ask you for your
authentication question and answer. (During registration you supplied
us with an authentication question and answer which we use to verify
your identity) If you answer correctly, we will provide you with your
account number and password.
-----
And of course we don't have this account number and its password...
akersche
April 23rd, 2001, 17:10
Hi,
tried to make changes... first it seemed ok.
But I got the same email about worldnic...
BUT it looks like as worldnic and networksolution are the same company...
you can retrieve your Account Number at:
https://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/account/retail_accountNumber.jhtml
Perhaps it's the same password as the one with Namezero...
I couldn't try at the moment, cause I got a system error...
Keep me up to date, if somebody manages...
Well I got a reply (why my domain expires already in 2001). That was quick:-)
Mr. Kersche,
Thank you for your inquiry.
Yes, You are correct, your registration has been extened until 2002.
(guess it's gonna need like 2 days until this shows up in the whois...)
Greetings

Then I tried to retrieve my password here : https://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/account/retail_enterAcctNumber.jhtml?domainName=
but it asks me for a secret question and I don't have a clue about this...
I should stop trying to find my password. here's a message i received : "The question or answer you have chosen does not match our records. Please try again. Note: After a total of 3 failed attempts, your account will be locked. " :(

Network Solutions, Inc, a VeriSign Company, has informed us that the information listed in the InterNic directory of domain names must match the information of the registrant of the domain per rules and regulations set by ICANN

New response from namezero!
Thank you for your inquiry and your recent upgrade. Namezero's policy is to extend the registration of pay service domains to cover the term of service you bought with Namezero. This means if you purchased two years of Namezero Plus service your domain will be registered for at least two years from the date of upgrade.
Currently we are in the process of transferring WHOIS information for pay members to the members sign up information. Once this WHOIS transfer is completed we will extend the term of your domain's registration based on the product you bought. We are sorry for the delay in getting all this information correct, but we expect to have it completed shortly (all domains are expected to be correctly set up by end of April).
Thank you for using the Namezero Service!
Best Regards,
The Namezero Team

I've only had a couple customers attempt this tough task, and both were denied by Namezero.

In regards to the "netzero" thing - I had just got done talking to a friend about netzero and then i was reading this post. I guess it just stuck with me. Perhaps Netzero has some sort of subliminal advertising going... hmm..
You're right - there are always cheaper registrars. I don't deny that, but then again, I respect the rules of this forum and I won't try to convince anyone into using my services.

Why will namezero deny the transfer ? The registrar is network solutions.
And the people that ordered the plus account are listed as the admin/billing contact and as the registrant so I don't see what is the problem with namezero here...

did they change yours already, lynks?
about the password that is needed to make changes at networksolution (or worldnic), i did contact namezero and networksolution. got no satisfying response so far... keep you posted...
and transfering out of namezero is no problem, when you are the admin. but i guess it's a good idea to wait 60 days before doing so...
and registrar... there might be reasons for taking a more expensive one... like good support, good uptime of the change interface... and perhaps one even wants to have redirection, email or dns-server access... (if one thinks mydomain won't be availiable for ever...)
Would be interresting to hear, when somebody successfully transfers out of Namezero...

Still nothing either ;(
Getting a bit pissed now, payout double what I could have got from gkg.net or something similar and it's the worst service I have seen!

I paid for NameZero Plus but they have not yet extended my registration, it expires 25-June. Then what? What if one of my site visitors does a lookup & sees that it expires soon. Will the quickest finger grab it? Do I have have to sit up until midnight 25-June to re-register?

guess namezero won't give your domain free...
so they would wait and perhaps sell it.
but i guess when you upgrade, they would just let your site there...
contact the costumer support... you should get an answer! Usually they are quick. (Although sometimes you don't get the answer you are looking for).
Today it was strange, when I contacted them: First I recieved an error email, saying that there mailbox is full!
(how can that happen, when they allow just text emails?! Got friends that have a mailbox with 1GB and get huge emails.... But such a company should have a even huger mailbox if needed...)
Anyway, I guess there answer would be interesting for a couple of you andyou don't need to ask them once more, what's up with extending the extra year, you already paid for:
Mr. Kersche,
The Network Solutions Whois usually takes awhile to update. It will eventually be updated.
All changes to personal data will still need to be made through Namezero. This can be done by selectong "Sitemap" from http://www.namezero.com and filling out the "Conatct/Free Form" with your new information.
Best regards,
The Namezero Team

"Thank you for your inquiry.
Free Service:
For current members of the Namezero Free Services who use their domains in accordance with the terms and conditions of the service, Namezero will apply the annual renewal policy currently in place at the time of expiration. Members of the Free Services may, at that time upgrade their domain to the Plus Service.
Plus Service:
Namezero will contact Plus Service members in advance of the expiration date of their domain in order to avoid any interruption in their service, and allow them to renew their Plus Services.
Thank you for using the Namezero Service!"
I upgraded to NameZero Plus in Feb 2001 & the domain expires in June 2001. What are they saying? Do I have to renew Plus and/or renew my domain in June?

in your case, they say:
they are going to contact you for renewing registration.
(lets hope so)
BUT what you need to do is: Register your Namezero Plus Domain for another year with them!
(You need to be in the whois for 60 days before you can transfer out to a cheaper registrar!)
So go to the plus section support and sent a mail to the billing and state that you wanna register your domain for another year...
greetings Arno

Hello. I'm trying to transfer my namezero domain too. There is a little bit of information here.
http://pub6.ezboard.com/fnamezerodomainnames.showMessage?topicID=2.topic
It's old, but it might be helpful. Good luck.
I don't quite trust the information given at the page dripstick provided. Read it carefully for yourselves.
Lynks, akersche... no more updates on this? What's happened since your last posts?

*MY UPDATE*
------------------------------MY EMAIL ---------------------------------------
Hello,
I have waited patiently with no response from Namezero. The agreement stated that when I upgraded my account to (Personal Plus) a bonus year would be added to my initial expiry date. This has not happened yet and the latest
email(s) I have sent have received no reply.
I may be forced to take legal action, along with other Namezero
customers if this issue is not resolved promptly. Please notify me whether you wish to upgrade my account with another year as stated in your agreement, or otherwise.
Yours sincerely

------------------------------NAMEZERO--------------------------------------
******,
The Whois database should be updated shortly with the extra year.
Best regards,
The Namezero Team
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A quick check of my record still shows august 2001 as my expiry. 3 Emails after this have resulted in nothing. I think I am going to bring a class action against them.
I am writing one more email. If the do not update my domain with th other year, petition time. I will post more info here. Other methods will be taken if they do not upgrade via the petition.
Thankyou

Hi Lex and Lynks and all others,
dripstick just wanted some info. had a discussion in another thread... so he took the thread to something else... and i still don't know the answer of my questions.
http://www.freewebspace.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=5497
(Question to DNS and change...)
But what I got is the passwort for Networksolution. So I am able to change the data on my domain. (Changed the DNS-servers. using mydomain now...)
For details see:
http://www.freewebspace.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=5152
(I've got the domain registered... but no space!)
My domain is also still not extended. And I ddin't sent another email to Namezero Plus. But perhaps it would be a good idea to ask NetworkSolution. Cause Namezero blames them...
Leagal action:
That's much work... and a bit risky.
I play with the thought of transfered out and paying myself for another year. It's below $10.
Anybody got the extra year so far?!
Greetings
Arno

My Plus domain expired on June 20th 2001. A WHOIS showed this date even after June 20th & my NZ account still worked. Today (June 25th) the WHOIS finally shows an expiry of June 20th, 2002 (hooray!) - so I got my paid-for full year extension.
NZ told me in early June that it had been extended in April but that the Network Solutions listings were not up to date.

i already got my domain for over 60 days,
but the extra year still doesn't show up.
Anyway I transfered today to godaddy. Hope it's working.
Also I sent an email to NetworkSolutions, so they correct the problem with the extra year.
(Namezero Plus Support was blaming them, for not updating whois so far...)
Really hope it works out with transfer and extra year... (so it would be vailid until 2003).
Anybody has been successful in transfering out so far?
Greetings Arno
PS: Glad, that I already changed DNS. So Namezero can't ---- up my DNS:-))

Yes me :D
Namezero transferred the ownership to me on 21st April. On 21st June morning, I sent the request to be transferred out of NSI finally :)
An it took 5 days to go away from NSI (to an opensrs reseller) with no problem at all
Now I'm F-R-E-E :) :)

ups... sorry lex... my error...
60days of course...
my email to NetworkSolution was sucessful.
they extended my domain for one year in the whois :-)
so i payed ~$25 for upgrade at Namezero and got my name for 2 years...
That's a reasonable price... $25/2 yrs = $12.50/yr = reasonable
I (my mom) paid $2.45 more than what you got it for a year..

did transfer out of namezero (networksolutions)
successfully, too:-)
that's true the offer at namezero was ok. was just much work and troubles with the email there...
So I am happy I did transfer to godaddy. They are really cheap, got good support and you can modify things easy and can have 4 DNS for my domain. Not just 2 like at Networksolutions.

I finally got birkitty.com away from namezero and onto proper hosting! Took waiting (and waiting, and waiting) and had to transfer the domain to a friendlier registrar, but once that was done it was smooth sailing. :)
