Antonio, Jan is a very common name, for both males (Europe) and females.
With females, it can be a shorter version of Janet, Janice, Janette, Janica and a few others. But it can be that they were named Jan, because the parents liked it.

Jan, or, Janet, means "God's gracious gift". I'm pretty sure the origin is English.

Yes, the name Jan (pronounced: "Yahn") is a guy's name, and it's of German origin. It's the German equivalent of Jean in French, Juan in Spanish, and John in English. Since Dutch is a Germanic language, I suppose they adopted the name from Germany. :)

Jan it's for sure a short name for Janice.
And about inventing names, here in portugal we are pretty good at it, Antonio is a commonly used name for males such as Silas, but problably Silas has brazilian origins..
Jan is not an unusual name, these are....
Juvenal <------ a friend of mine, male
Januario <------- an ex-teacher, male
...
There are more, when I get more, i will reply them here so you can all see....
:)
