http://www.nightsteel.com

it is on a t1 but they don't have many people... he can afford to keep it going forever because he host the sites from his own computer, if you suggest new features he will try to get them put on. you get a sub domain.

he makes sites for people too.
he has a 200 gig hard drive.

i think i answered all questions you might have didn't i?

why will nightsteel.com close? he runs it from his own computer... if you can't keep somthing going when you don't even need to pay anything for it then that's pathetic...

pathetic is right. allow me to explain:

ok, so say i put a site on there... on his computer.

will it be up a year from now? two years? 3? he'll leave his computer running the better part of 24 hours a day?? non-stop? for 2 or 3 years? it will still be running solid, non-stop?

alright, tell him i wish him luck with that.

every website is hosted on a computer man...

basically what your saying is nobody in the world's website will last...

keith
April 20th, 2001, 01:20
well, that would be true, man... if every site were hosted on a home computer! get a freaking clue!

you see, there's these nifty little things called linux boxes........

well, before i get into that, what kinda computer is it? just his everyday computer running windows 98 and apache or something?

Omari

i don't know, but you don't need to always say people will fail

home computers and business computers are both computers... if you have a computer with a t1 connection you can host websites...

if @home allowed servers i would be able to host websites on my home computer... what's stopping me?

Well, I agree with keith.

I mean itīs much more, letīs call it 'complex' to run a FWP, there are many factors depending on how to keep such a business alive.

Omari, itīs not an offend but try to be a lil bit more realistic. Okay, itīs a nice idea to start a provider via home but I refuse to believe that it would be successful and/or last for a long while.

This guy (the 1gig guy) is just asking for warez sites and hackers to invade his server.

Prediction: This guy's site goes down in 2 weeks due to ISP finding out about it and/or service abuse.

Sorry, I made a mistake. In this other thread, Alabamaman said the URL was http://www.knightsteel.com instead of http://www.nightsteel.com . So naturally, the knightsteel page doesn't load, so I mistakened it to be down right now.

This guy could make his description of services a little easier to understand, and maybe give it a proofreading.

Some good services are offered though. free site monitoring free email.
not even 1000 visits since march 4th. probably wont become too busy.

It's running IIS 4.0 according to the HTTP headers.

why are you guys complaining that the FWP is run from home

If it was paid hosting, I wouldn't trust it
but since it's FWP

why not

I've got nothing to lose

If your site is large in size it would be good to know your host will last. If it is small you could have a mirror or two so if one goes down the other will be up.

Coolin
April 21st, 2001, 18:07
You could have a mirror. But the problem is, where to put the mirror? There's no place good to put the mirror.

keith

in this case the mirror would be less likely to go down than the main location.

Well, if you use redirection, you just upload your site somewhere else and redirect it to the new URL. No loss....

He needs to pay for the T1 connection. Those have gone down a lot in price recently, but they still are fairly expensive.

He has 2 back up computers, If his main computer needs to reboot he will use his other computers. He uses "we" when he talks, sounds like a group of people.
