View Full Version : Does Tera-byte cap downloads?

Well, It's quite slow. I put a picture up (284k) of my desktop to show some friends. It was a pretty large file, so I zipped it and it ending up about 230k. The problem is when they downloaded it they only got around 3.0k per second. I didn't belive them so I downloaded it 2.7k a sec is the highest I got (56k). I usually get 5-6k a second.
I wondered why, and now I uploaded the same file @geocities, and guess what 5.5k a second. Are they having problems or do they cap downloads. Uploading is fine 4-5k a second on average

interesting topic.
I was and still am thinking of going with tera-byte... (for a site of a friend I am developing and perhaps of a friend).
I know that there has been problems with the connection to Europe... But heard that this is fixed.
BUT I have heard really a lot good stuff about them and their support. And they are affordable and guess reliable.
But now I read some bad threads about them:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=8052
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=222245e7c60b71a4d3831b89552da4fa&threadid=8335&highlight=terabyte
Also they have been down recently... But that's ok. No host is gonna be up all the time! (99,9% is good enough)
And heard that "RAQ control panels aren't really somthing to rave about"
http://www.freewebspace.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=4230
I still think Raq is nice!
Now I pinged tera-byte and found out, that I hop also via alter.net (from Austria, Europe).
Well the site of my friend would be for costumeres in Austria, too. Perhaps they use a diffrent provider, but I bet they would also have to go over alter.net.
What's the matter with alter.net them?
Is the problem at the moment with all web-space providers at the moment? Or are otheres routed diffrent?
Thought it would be ok to go with an American (Canadian) host...
I got some larger files, too. (1.5mb) At least for my private site... Some student stuff... Currently I host with my university and download rate should be 60k per second. (well not if you got a slow connection).
What be pleased to hear what's up with Alter.net and some more opinions on tera-byte and what alternatives are good.
(VDI, DialtoneInternet, webhosting.com,...)
Greetings Arno

Tera-byte is usually faster when it goes through alter.net (as opposed to sprintlink)... They have had some network problems but I've never seen a problem with alter.net...

Guess I have to wait, anyways Tera-byte (although not one of the cheap ones) is great. Questions are usually answered within an hour and they have answered all my questions.
The speed "Was" fast when I registered but because of the problems with ALTER.NET, it has slowed done a bit. The only thing you will really notice is the download speeds from your site.
I would recommended them

Hop 24 is firewalled. It won't respond in a traceroute because of that. This has no effect on the route itself.

Thanks, CJB. learnt something again.
i guess the problem is/was just that there was to much load... are some parts had to be resent for a large download...
Anybody know, if tera-byte is working fine again (via alter.net)
