I was wondering just which software companies design the best games, as regarding any game type, an for any platform?
[- as research for my game site below]

I actually stopped playing Counter-Strike just to play this game. It's so fun!!!111
Ever since EA has done away with Westwood, I've stopped buying any game that is somehow affiliated with them.

Blizzard has consisitently made awesome, bestselling games. I don't remember them ever making a bad game.
WarCraft II/III, StarCraft, and Diablo are all huge hits.

EA, and all it's underlings. Maxis especially. Microsoft actually makes some pretty good RTS games (Age of Empires/Mythology) and you can't forget the Need for Speed series. That's EA.

EA is a terrible company. All it does is take over other successful production companies and either all but makes them disappear, or makes them release crappy games that are nothing more than follow onv ersions of previous games that lack anything in gameplay or originality.
No, EA is definately the company that caters to a mass market audience.
Digital Anvil is half decent (part of Microsoft) but half the guys that worked on their game (Freelancer) were all originally from Origin anyway, which made some of the best games ever (that were quality + sold well) (Ie: Crusader, Wing COmmander, Ultima) Unfortunately, EA bastardised Origin into a company thats sole purpose is Ultima Online and ousted Richard Garriot.
Lucasarts is still alright, and are still managing to look as though they have a few promising and orignal games coming up (although my guess, as with what happened with Monkey Island 4, is that they are going to bastardise classics in the name of a quick buck).
I can't think of any gaming companies that are any good anymore though. VLC's mention of Interplay made me think, but I havent played an Interplay game for years, so no idea what theyre like anymore.
