I signed up with them. They look good. They even host domains. I would have a backup site somewhere like freesevers, though, in case they go down.

It seems like the filenames are causing problem due to case-sensitivity. Try changing the image names in the HTML documents to an absolute case. eg: Change http://msrva.x-stars-x.com/thumbnails/tn01.jpg to http://msrva.x-stars-x.com/thumbnails/TN01.JPG

BTW, Does this make sense ..

Presently we have 40 servers and 4 RAID arrays, able to handle up to 250Mbps of bandwidth. Each subcluster can handle up to 500Mbps and we can have unlimited subclusters on one cluster. That means that our system is able to handle an unlimited volume of bandwidth and an unlimited volume of visitors.

Heh. Interesting logic. :)

I suppose it's some host's latest argument to justify its use of "unlimited bandwidth". :)

2. Free Hosting
We give you a Simple Hosting for free, but in exchange we will put our Banners (Splash or Ad Frame) on all your pages. This type of Program can break your site's design, and has limits like - 200Kb per file.

I don't want any ad to break my site design with a 200 KB ad file!

One plus point is they are located at above.net. The entire Cnet.com network is located at above.net.

Think they are saying
1) Ads break the design (=go for our paid option!)
2) You can't have files larger than 200kb on the free account

No, there is a 200k limit on the size of your files. That means that none of your files can be over 200k.

Just signed up. You can have as many sites as you want within your account, problem is when you go to select what type of site you would like to create there is only a preium option. There are complaints in the forums about people getting charged for stuff they thought was free. Step carefully.

That´s because their still in beta stage according to some particular functions in the members area.
Don´t fear that, if you´ve chosen the 'Free Website'- Option they won´t charge you for anything.

Anyways, I´ve posted this FWP some weeks ago, I wonder why nobody noticed that... This forum is full of reposts now.

I never got to choose a free option

As long as you didn´t sign up for "Host X Clicks" you get automatically the free account.

Something about they:
http://www.hostonfly.net/about.shtml
http://mrtg.sc1.hostonfly.net/public/
http://www.hostonfly.net/founders.shtml (I was shocked 8-)

All i can say about the people supposidly gettin charged, is: DONT PAY!
It's not a signed contract, and if they never gave their credit card number out then they are fine. .......

BiteTheBugByte
April 24th, 2001, 16:49
Exactly, and when you ask them personally (i.e. via email) you´ll get an answer saying that they won´t charge you.

Hmm, tried some test pages but cannot get .php pages to work. Seems that they only support php cgi scripts in the /cgi bin/ directory.
Clicked on 'premium hosting' (the only option) and had no ads on my pages.

Ryan_man
April 25th, 2001, 14:59
Hey, I signed up over a week ago, and still havnt received an email. I think there's something wrong with their scripts. Because I even signed up again, with the same email address and name and everything, and it said the email was on its' way. Hmmmm, This service is crap.
The signup just shows how good the support is with this "fwp".

Hi, Hostonfly is very good so far.

When I signed up, I got a message right away with the username. With the username and the password you have chosen, you can login into the menbers area and add ftp accounts.

Your general user name is something like: user0000
Then you ftp username: host0000,
Password: your general account password.
ftp address: forgot. Not just ftp.hostonfly.net.

The speed from SF is pretty good. Ping time around 20ms.
For wahtever reason, it's banner free now.

try http://free.x-web-x.com or http://go.cx

are these guys ad free or somthin? it says this for clicks stuff...

BiteTheBugByte
April 26th, 2001, 04:24
They are not ad free and your account will be kicked if you try to bypass their banners, this may also happen when you include serverside scripts [CGI, PHP(which actually does work!)] because their ad system does not recognize or interpret the ad code for those pages. Look into their forum for more ...

HostOnFly are very fast and reliable. The one thing I liked the most about them is the Host X Clicks program. That means that I can have a free banner-less website with php, perl, mysql, etc. and that I can pay for my bandwidth with the clicks I send from my site. In my oppinion an excellent idea.
I have 6 sites hosted with them from about 1 year ago and I am very pleased with the services.
BTW, PHP is working fine!!!
READ THE FAQ!!! READ THE FAQ!!!READ THE FAQ!!!READ THE FAQ!!!READ THE FAQ!!!READ THE FAQ!!!READ THE FAQ!!!READ THE FAQ!!!READ THE FAQ!!!READ THE FAQ!!!READ THE FAQ!!!

Just making sure you heard me! I do not like people that do not read the FAQs on my sites or on every other site!

Best regards to all!

I can't believe they said that they'd have SPLASH pages...who wants to go to some guy's homepage and look at a bunch of banner ads that say "CLICK HERE" and then in little teeny 8 point Verdana "click here for joe blow's web page"...

I can see Hostonfly going down in maybe a month or two...I mean, it's bad when you don't have any customers...but when visitors find out about SPLASH PAGES...well, I'm never going back to any page with just a bunch of advertisements BEFORE a title page.

When you log onto their Member area, there will be an option for you to Add Host (The others: Add Mailbox, add domain)
Click on Add host, they will give you the FTP address depends on your subdomain you choose

HostOnFly is there for many months now and they´re not going down ... I´ve been with them for a long time too and they were always good (at least for a pr0n host). They´ve relaunched their whole service, so don´t expect it to be perfect yet! Damn!

But I have opted for a domain hosting.
I dunno what to do. The faq is scanty. My question has been voiced by someone in their "Chat", but not yet replied.
Could you divine the secret (!) for me.
Thanks!
