Helo ppl I was wondering what I need to make a windows xp a server? I would like to know what I need besides a firewall (oh what kind of firewall is very secure for a server?)
1. Where can I get stuff like mySQL?
2. What kind of server is easy to maintain and reliable? (u must know I'm a windows user)
3. If I wanted to stream music do I need real audio server or can I just stream it through http ?
I think this is all I want to ask if you have other information u think I might need tell me:) Please?:)

The very, very first thing to do is check your ISP's TOS to make sure that you're allowed to run a server.
Then I'd reccomend a all-in-one package. PHPerl (http://phperl2.sf.net) is my favorite, and includes Apache 1.x, mySQL, PHP 4.x and Perl 5.x (don't know mySQL version, all I know is it's bloody hard to start it up).
Epgs also has his own product, FoxServ (google it) which many people use and like, but I have heard it hasn't been updated in a while, and it doesn't have a control panel like PHPerl2.
Shop around for all-in-one installers of Apache, mySQL and PHP. There are plenty at HotScripts (http://hotscripts.com) I believe.
Don't know anything about firewalls or security, because I've only set up LAN servers before. I'll leave that for someone else :classic2:

Does linux have a GUI?

Depends which one. Most of them come with KDE/Gnome and you can chose what you want however, for a server, you don't want a GUI, it's a waste.

Well, actually, If he is new to linux, it may not be a waste. He can use the gui to get everything set up, then he can just exit out of X and get all that memory back.

I've found it really difficult to exit X...VERY difficult...requires editing quite a few files to make sure you spawn a VT, and at least in the X version I have it only spawns a weird one, like 6.

ok here is the information I have. The computer is my friends. He has a win98 with a broadband connection. Is that enough speed to make a server?? It's not going to be a hosting company or anything. Maybe about 10 ppl would be on it. So about the OS should i change it into something else like win2000 server?

If your friend lives in Sweden you should be al set on a home cable/DSL line. If he lives any place else, forget about hosting anyone because it would be far too slow.

Well about me having my own product, I got kicked out of the leadership of the project and that is why it hasn't been updated.

a GUI doesn't make it easier to learn IMO. I never learned with a GUI, it made it more confusing for me. Commands are easy.... and straight forward.

I dunno what the fck Bruce is talking about. As long as the upload cap is 256k+ you should be just fine. You would have to be crazy to use any DOS based os as a server. Get 2kserver if you cant learn linux.

256k = 32kB
32 kB / 10 people = 3.2kB per person
If each site has one visitor at a time, then you'll still get the speed of a 28.8k modem. If each site has 2 visitors, you'll get 14.4k.

Yeah, I agree with Bruce 256k is too small for even one site. I have buisness DSL with a 1M upload and I found that got bogged down after about 5 or 6 users.

256k is fine if he isnt going to have many visitors.

256k isn't even a big enough pipe for a single person to browse one page let alone enough to host 10 different sites.

wtf are you talking about bruce ? That goes to show that to truly don't know what your talking about. You even said it yourself, 256k pipe is around 30kb/s. Average webpage with graphics = 5k to 10k. 32kb > 10kb thus it would download in less than a second. Please try to think of these's things before you go shooting off again Bruce

You cannot host multple websites on a 256kbps upload.. especially on a DSL or Cable Connection. Sites that have a 786kbps upload still have problems.
Your websites will load slow and that's with 1 person browsing. Imagine if there were 5 people. Goodluck.

I think the guy said that he's not willing to host anyone...
Anyhow, for ten users, even if they are all at the same time visiting his page, a 256kbps should be enough for a small web-page.
The only "dilemma" should be with that Win98 :biggrin2:

what I meant is I might host only about 10 other people but I'll have more than 10 people who will be visiting at one time. Oh well then I guess I'll just have to go to my teacher. Anyone know of a good ezine template?
