Why are celeron's so much cheaper?
Celeron 1.8GHz - $98 CDN
Pentium 4 1.8 GHz - $193 CDN

Because Celeron is such a crap...

Because Celerons have so little cache.
Socket 478 Celerons have 128k while P4s have 512k cache.

Whats cache? :o

They can probably do a better job describing it than I can.

I just never knew there was need for cache in a CPU

Well actually, inside the die on the processor, the cache takes up more room then anything else. It is responable for retaining the data that the processor is about to compute.

If you ask me, the Intel Celeron processor is for those who shop for computers based on processor speed, nothing else.
These are the people that would buy a computer with a 2.2ghz Celeron, 64mB of ram and the crappiest, used generic parts that can possibly be found at the worst garage sales if the right salesman came along with such a deal.
On a side note, I am completely ignoring corporate buyers who prefer quantity at low prices over quality at high prices when it comes to the computers used at their businesses.
I am merely referring to the large majority of consumer buyers who would purchase a computer only for its x.x amount of ghz and nothing more. :p
(And I used to be one of these people :biggrin2: )

Celerons do make good folding boxen though... because cpu speed is the only thing that matters for them.

AMD ALL THE WAY MAN... I hate Intel.... So i'd have to vote AMD but if i must... Intel Pentium is the upgraded version of Intel Celeron, the processing power greatly increased from the Celeron to the Pentium. Basicly they are two different types of processers used for different types of stuff. If you plan on bein a game maniac and you use those AGP Graphics cards, You would most likely use a Pentium 3 or Pentium 4. If you were just using the computer for work and typing I suggest using a celeron because you wouldn't want to pay more money for the power you wont be using... I on the other hand have my own AMD computer built by myself with Dual Operating systems, Slackware Linux and Windows XP Pro. Really, it all depends on your taste, and how much $$ you are willing to spend.

AMD is will never catch up to Intel on 32bit processors. They should have moved to quad-pumped like Intel a long time ago.
Right now, the Barton 3200+ is going to be the last 32bit proc we see from AMD.
64bit on the other hand, is AMDs strong-point. The opteron(sp?) is cheaper and much better than the Itanium.
If you plan on being top notch box, Intel is the only way to go. Right now I believe Intel proc are cheaper than AMD.
Anywho, back on topic, the main reason for the pric differnce is indeed the cahce size. But the claim that celeron on only for people who want high GhZ, is a lie. p4 based celerons make great server processors. They are also great for people on a budget.

Well, you are right about the cheaper part, but only for the top processors. On all other processors, AMD is still cheaper. But then, dont forget that P4 motherboards are still more expensive.

Not really, I've seen most p4 motherboards cheaper than xp mobos.

But right now, AMD has problems increasing clock speed on the 64bit, which might still pose as a problem... As you can see from benchmarks, the pentium 4 is still faster than AMD's Athlon64.
And not everyone buy celerons because of clock speed only, my friend buys them because its cheap, and he knows of the fsb and cache thingy.

Regardless, a dual Opteron beats a dual 3GHz Xeon.

...and it hasn't been released yet. Therefore I assumed you meant the Opteron which is the only 64bit cpu AMD has out now.

Yeah, what did you see and ECS?
What I meant, if 2 motherboards with the same features and a silimalr grade chipset (low, midrange top of the line) made by the same manufacturer but one is for a P4 and one for an AMD, the AMD will be cheaper.

I have been using celeron.
It lags when you didn't format your computer for several months.
