I think geocities.com is still a good place to build your site.

Yeah, if you still use framesets and bravenet. If you want your site to look good, I think you should look elseware.

Yep I still use bravenet. Perfect for beginners!

Visitors to my site think my add ons are cool anyway.

GeoCities does have reliaibility, though...

That is true, they do have reliabitity, but I can't imagine using up 15 megs of space with no SSI or CGI. Stuff like that just makes updating so easier.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I can't live with PHP anymore. Pre-1997 I was living with all static pages (choke). It's too bad GeoCities doesn't have any kind of server side scripting languages. I think you'd build up a lot more of a loyal user base if you gave them either CGI, PHP, or ASP...

True geocities is reliaible & fast & ftp. But no simple support for any language , thatz to bad.

Probably why it's so "fast and reliable".

Yeah, but you have to consider that if it's lasted this long with the services it has, they probably won't change it. Aside from that, they aim their pages toward beginners(Hence the Geobuilder, or whatever it's named now)...At least that's how I've always looked at them. Really, if you're just starting out, it's not a bad place to host your page. I mean, the ads aren't terrible, they're reliable, and they do allow you to progress into ftp, etc.

God knows I couldn't stand them now, though. I don't think I could do every single page again...even copying and pasting the templates. ::shudder::

It is a good place to start, if you only have five pages on your site and two of them are about your dog, then I don't think you need any kind of server-side anything.

Great first place, hopefully people move past it though.

I have to tell you that I have two web sites with Geocities and they have been the best free web hosts so far...And I am not a beginner, thank you very much! I have had one site with them for almost two years now and static html has worked just great---Yes CGI and ASP are nice to use (I use CGI on one of my other sites) but they are only as good as the designer who incorporates them into their website. There are too many sites out there today with too many bells and whistles that ARE NOT cross-browser compatible and it is very frustrating!

I don't even try to be cross-browser compatible. If people want to use a browser that doesn't know what a 7 point font is, that is their problem.

EVERYTHING LOOKS BETTER IN IE, and IT'S FREE.

If looks good in IE 5 then is ok. I think IE5 is what most people use nowadays. I could be wrong.

About 70 to 80% of the visitors to my sites use IE.

I'm not talking about fonts...that's a little "passe" don't you think? I'm referring more to DHTML, etc. etc. I personally wish there was only one browser, one version. Designing would be so much easier.

Eh, I try to keep mine generally 4.x cross-browser. I figure that about 90% of users to web sites generally use Internet Explorer 4/5 or Netscape 4.x.

GeoCities is mostly beginner-oriented, and that's one of their downfalls. There are a lot of people that use the GeoBuilder to make pages, but you know what? They know NOTHING about advertising their site on the web...

What good's a page if nobody sees it? There are a lot of Geo-ites that make pages so tastefully titled as "HANSUN SUX" and "BRITTNAY SPEARS IOS DUMMB!" so...programming languages would be very nice for users.

If that happens, then Micro---- would have dominated the browser market, and they'll be able to do anything they want with the browsers, 'cause they're the only one with a browser and they have complete control over it. So it's like "my way or the high way". (something like that anyways)

I'm still waiting for Netscape to resume their previous status as the better browser. Always avoid using Micro----'s stuff if possible, I say.

The problem is that AOL owns Netscape, now. You think they're going to make it a good browser, when it might interfere in some small way with their software? I don't think so. They're going to run it into the ground, just like Vince McMahon is going to run WCW into the ground.
