I'm not that great with computers so you'll have to forgive this newbie-like questin.

How can I get cable internet on 2 computers at once? Is there any cheap (free?) way to do this, or do I have to contact my provider and pay an extra monthly fee?

Thanks :)
Sorry for my stupidness lol.

You cant do it free. You will most likely have to buy a router.

I don't mind having to pay for hardware and stuff, I just don't want an extra monthly fee (if possible). And my computers aren't in the same room.

In that case, I'd suggest a wireless router and two wireless NICs.

I, too, would recommend wireless. My wireless network here at home is fantastic. But I wouldn't place all my systems on a wireless network and I wouldn't use wireless nics, I would use Wireless USB Adapters.

I also have a wireless router and a wireless card for my notebook. The router is right next to the desktop, so I just bought a CAT5 cable for that.

Wireless are sometimes a waste of money. Look at the wireless modem here, it costs over SGD$800-1000

If you're just looking for a simple way, a router will do.

If your going wireless make sure to get good encrpytion and the lastest patches or your wireless network will become the latest hangout for hackers. I'd suggest a linksys router ;)

You can pick up a wireless router for like $60 anyway.

Actually, it was one of the best things I'd did in my parents' house. If I hadn't done it, we wouldn't have found out the ant infestation in the house, or that the phone wiring was FUBAR'ed. :D

is 100ft network cable enough? A router will work.

I have 2 computers in my room and 1 computer in my cousin's room in back yard. my router is set between my cousin's room and my room. 50ft and 100 ftp network cable will work.

You can push 1000mbps through 100ft of Cat6 cabliing, and I think it's the same for Cat5e, however I'm not too sure. Most Cat cables are shielded so if it goes outside, it shouldn't be damaged. And if you put a Cat cable in an area where you can trip over it, I strongly suggest you DON'T go into the Networking industry.

I reccomend a router hooked up to a wireless WAP. Especially a router with a hardware firewall, just in case. I haven't been hit by the latest worm epidemic because of the hardware firewall on our router, and the fact that the router only forwards ports I explicitly open (hence no port 135 sniffing.)

If you have an attic, and don't mind the look, you can pull CAT5 through the attic and drop it through the ceiling to your computers, which is what we did for the desktops. Some people might object to CAT5 dangling from the walls though ;)
