yesterday when I tried to open IE, my laptop froze.
I rebooted, windowsxp -----ed in dos that hal.dll was corrupted and that I had to replace it, thus xp wont start. fine, I replace it via dos from floppy from other xp system, then another ----load of corrupted things appeared.

So I try repairing it using xp cd and repair function,
didnt work

reformated my C:, reinstalled xp and it seemed fine until yesterday evening.
It started to freeze randomly every 30-60 sec for about 1-3secs each time.

Each time i reboot, chkdsk kicks in and just stays at 0, dont go up. I have to cancel each time to goto windows.

And thats on a fresh reformated C: + fresh xp :(

What could be wrong?

It could be your hard drive, those hard drives are very fragile.

Yes, it is my hd :(

I tried to reformat, only this time doing a full format, not quick format.

It formatted for 8 hours, only to get to 27%. (its a 6gb partition...)
ALL the time format was displaying:
trying to recover allocation something xxx xxx

xxx xxx = some number that increased every minute or so

I got tired of it and just rebooted.

Is there a way to fix this within xp or something?
or my hd is kaput and I have to get a new one :(

If it's trying to recover clusters, I'd say just to get a new one (won't be worth the trouble).

If you have a good idea how to open the laptop, you can order a hard drive and install it yourself. I had a laptop that had a 20GB that went dead.. so I ordered a 30GB hard drive and it's fantastic...

I ordered it from http://www.bixnet.com/

They have a 6GB hard drive for $99.95
