iPrimus Broadband in Australia

Does anyone have any good or bad experiences with broadband from iPrimus? Would you say their pricing is reasonable?

I'm with Optus at the moment, but only on dial-up. It's really good - never get disconnected, it's always working - but yea, a little slow. I'm never going to use Telstra - too dodgy! What would you Aussies suggest? :classic2:

Broadband in Aus. Here is where i know my stuff.

Do not go with any adsl unlimited carriers except for www.dart.net.au All of the other ADSL Unlimited providers are connected through comindico, hence all the heavy leechers and abusers are on one network, which means shocking performance. Dodo is on this network.

www.netspace.net.au
www.internode.on.net
are the two ADSL ISP's I would recommend. Especially Netspace, and if you opt for the Flat Rate option (No Extra Cost) then you do not get charged excess usage rates.

If speed is what you are after then Optus Cable is the way to go, the connection is shaped once you go over your limit, and they are going to have a 6GB limit for $70/month soon. Ofcourse Optus has no free mirrors or servers to download from. Telstra does. Telstra offers GameArena (http://games.bigpond.com) and Bigpond Files. If you feel you will use these, then Bigpond cable is often faster than Optus. Of course you pay more for less downloads, but in my case GameArena and Bigpond Files more than make up for it.

That is pretty much the state of Aussie Broadband at the moment.

Wow! So many replies, so quickly! Thanks guys...

Optus, I know, are very reliable, their dial-up internet has proved that to me. I actually thought that you DID get charged for excess MB, like a few dollars or something. I'm sure somebody told me that? They must have been mistaken. :)

lol, TRUNKS, I don't know if I could support a company with such ANNOYING commercials!!! What are they like? Much downtime? What is support like?

I've never heard of Netspace... How long have they been around? Going to check out Dart, Netspace and Internode.

Um... As I'm uncertain about this, what is the difference between broadband and cable? Thanks everyone.

Netspace has free data to other netspace* users within your state [with a rather nice stuff collection] + OGN.com.au servers + a tucows mirror.

*= your state might be on PIPE (http://www.pipe.com.au) (free data to heaps of ISP's)

Difference between broadband and cable, heh, thats like asking the difference between narrowband and a 56k modem. Cable is a form of Broadband, as is ADSL. They are the main forms in Aus. ADSL is usually slower, but also a lot more competitive because all companies have access to the infrastructure. Cable on the other hand is only accessable to two companies. Telstra and Optus, hence less competition.

ADSL is available in more places, cable isnt. I'd go for ADSL over cable any day. I am still skeptical about any unlimited ADSL plans including Dart, and i highly recommend signing up with Netspace. Im thinking about paying $400 to break a contract with Bigpond to join Netspace.

www.whirlpool.net.au is your friend, check out the forums before signing up with anyone, if you want to. You should see me posting aswell.

As i said, DoDo ADSL i would never dream of connecting to. The speed issues are crap, you get worse performance than a 56k modem. They are on the comindico (unlimited leecher) network which is why it is so bad.

Hope i have helped.

We havnt had any downtime at all yet, and it works perfectly. The support has been great, apart from once when they were really busy and we had to wait an hour and a half for them to ring back. :p They told us how to set it up and stuff since were..crap. We got umm only 256 kbps ADSL, which is prettymuch the cheapest package... $60/ month (I think) for unlimited time and downloads, and it has an 'always on' connection-no dropouts, and THANK GOD- we can use the phone at the same time as the nets connected! Though you have to buy phoneline filters... only $20 though...:p

I hope that made sense. Im typing without thinking much :)

errr... correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't all those other adsl companies reselling on telstra lines? i thought that the majority of telstra wires are copper, where as optus had fibre optic cables everywhere, thus being better with cable?

i dunno, i gathered that from my dad's ramblings

Yeah to get ADSL you must have a copper line. Optus does offer their services over copper, but they do not lay it. Yes all companies use Telstra infrastructure, but, due to this being open to all companies, it is a lot more competitive than cable, which both Optus and Telstra have (both have fibre in certain places). Hope that clears it up.
