phpBB or Ikonboard? [Archive]

Should I use a Perl or PHP based forum system? Currently I have both phpBB and Ikonboard as pretty good free forums, so which would be better?

Anyone care to say which types of forums they chose (Perl or PHP) and why? Speed? Reliability? I'm not exactly sure. :D

Heh, is that how you choose forum software? I liked phpBB more in terms of looks but Ikonboard was more customizable... argh. There I go again.

Personally, I would go with a perl message board. That's because I really don't know anything about PHP.

But I like the way phpbb looks better than inkonboard.

I would totally go with Ikonboard ... it's perl which I would think is more widely supported among web hosts free and pay ...

Ikonboard is totally customizable ... I have turned many ikonboards into many things. I have a Audio database ... and a totally custmized iB to be easier on my users and more of a community and get feedback much easier.

So yeah, I would go with Ikonboard :D

If you can, however, find a server that provides PHP or MySQL, I would definately go with phpBB. It's faster, in my opinion. But when IkonBoard 3 Final comes out, everything changes, but that's in the future.

go with Ikonboard. Its pretty fast (even on f2s.com) and its really yes to modify

I would go with phpBB. If you hang around the hacks forum at phpBB you can implement a lot of fun and useful hacks. It is also faster than Ikonboard. Just go to the forum of phpBB and the forum of Ikonboard and you will notice a difference in speed. The Ikonboard is still so slow now even though they are using the latest version (version 3, beta 1).

phpBB all the way, verry fast, allmost nothing to setup. Also, I don't know any php and I succesfully added some hacks.

Ikonboard is fast, just not as fast as phpBB - but it's fast.

The problem with phpBB is that it required PHP and MySQL, the latter one is rarely supported even when PHP is. So, unless you managed to find some fwp with both PHP and MySQL, go with Ikonboard.

Or you could use freeSQL and some PHP host.

just choose, if you dont have a php host w/ mySQL then the logical choice is ikonboard, but php is much more stable than cgi...
