Hi
Well, I have finally decided to venture into the world of paid hosting. I'm looking for hosts that primarily support Cold Fusion MX. My top 2 choices are JodoHost.com ($6.95/month) and GearHost.com ($8.95/month). I'm pretty much tilted towards JodoHost.com because I have heard nothing but good about them. I've heard plenty of negative as well as good comments about GearHost but I'm considering them because they seem bigger than JodoHost
One thing that concerns me is how the hell do these hosts provide Cold Fusion MX so cheap? I run Macromedia Cold Fusion MX on my test server. Downloaded it as a 30-day trial. Unless you pay, it converts to the developer edition which can only be run locally. If wanted to run it publicly, it would cost me $7000 per server. This software is not cheap.
Are these companies running a cheaper version produced by a different company. If so, are there any differences from the Macromedia version? What is Allaire Cold Fusion and Cold Fusion Express?
I'd appreciate comments and info on both these hosts
Thanks
Dan

I've never heard of Coldfusion MX hosting that cheap but, doesn't mean it isn't around.
If you want to know how they do it, just thing about it.
1 Quad Xeon server, 1 copy of Cold Fusion MX, 5000 people on the box and... profit.
As for those two hosts, I've never heard of them.
Good luck! :D

Well, you have any other suggestions for CFMX hosts under $15?
These both are Windows host and I'd like to stick with windows because I'd plan to use SQL server in the future. SQL Server is free at JodoHost but isn't at GearHost.com. I guess that's another reason why I'd prefer JodoHost
But what matters to me most is a stable and reliable host. I'm willing to shell out a little extra for that.
umm.. I don't think IIS can handle 5000 domains even with a Dual XEON :)

your right, a dual xeon cant handle 5000 domains, but he said quad xeon.
One of our old servers was actually a quad xeon, with hyperthreading it would show up as 8 processors, pretty nice.
Not that we've hosted 5000 domains on one server, not even close, but I imagine its a possibility with:
Quad 2.4GHz Xeon
2-4GB Ram
3 x 147GB SCSI on raid 5 (:
Apache

And if IIS crashes, 5000 customers go offline :)
Our CP server is a Dual PIII. Our windows servers are mainly P4 (2.66GHZ) with 2GB DDR. We don't load more than 300 to 350 sites on these machines.

I never heard of JodoHost.com but have heard a lot about GearHost and can tell you that much of it was negative. Clients left hanging with no contact or support during troubled times. Every host has problems at one time or another. How they handle it and their clients is what makes the difference.

dont you think 2gb ram on a 2.6ghz p4 is overkill?
2gb ram maybe for dual xeon...

Well, I signed up at JodoHost and so far so good. Customer support is very responsive! I asked for certain permissions on some of my folders and on my database, it was done within an hour :)
Thanks for everyone's help! I'll keep you updated.

Let's hope you didn't jump into it too fast. There could be problem with support depending on where you are situated.

Jan. Thanks for the info. I have already visited WebHostingTalk.com and discovered they were banned so posted this question here instead. I've read that thread as well. I was a little weary about them because of that at first. But after some searching at WHT, I couldn't find a single negative comment about these people even after the ban. People were actually dodging the filter to recommend them.
I had emailed them a question regarding support. They said they had expanded their staff and plan to further expand it to true 24x7 in the coming months. From what I've read at their forums (http://support.jodohost.com) and at WHT, their support is pretty fast even though they are not 24x7.
But then again, if they turn out bad, I'll just ask for a refund and signup at GearHost.

Those dodging the filter were connected I believe. I had a look for one where three (or was it four) from the same IP posted praise about them. :confused2

lol!
I recall 3 recommendations I read. One from some MadDog guy another from some tushar person and the 3rd from a guy who likes Wine I presume. All had entered valid sites hosted with jodohost into their profile. The speeds were good thats what convinced me to signup. I don't believe those are false posts or are they?
Would like to hear what JodoHost has to say.

Banned on Webhostingtalk.com.. not a good sign.
Though over there, there are so many rules its hard not to break one or two. Though I think I've done okay. :D
Be careful with your selection of a host DanF! ;)

Yeah, many hosts are banned there. I'm right now browsing their forum and found out even CIHost.com is banned.
It's kind sad that if JodoHost is spending thousands of dollars on software alone, they would engage in that. I've not seen any JodoHost ad, maybe they should invest in that besides playing around with usernames ;)

Not at all, frequently goes up to 100% usage. We have to restart every now and then. Main reason for is poorly written code. Many customers purposely force their ASP sessions to remain open and that creates even more problems while restarting.

The only thing we have to say was that we broke the rules. This was personally not done by me but this is something we regret and are hoping that someday WHT will unban us.
We do invest in advertising as well. We spend over $1000 a month at ISPCheck alone (a part of the WHT network). Currently we have stopped advertising as we are performing various restructuring tasks on our servers. For example, we will now be having stand-alone dedicated SQL Servers instead of having them deployed with the web servers. We will also be having a fresh Class C IP block.
Another thing we are considering is deploying VPS servers and introducing HSphere reseller plans. We are hoping that by the end of this month many of these tasks will be completed and we can revive our ad campaign

Well, I discovered one major problem with JodoHost. They don't allow custom ActiveX controls. I needed that so badly! How come this wasn't told to me when I signed up? I'm deeply disappointed
Also, regarding your new IP policy (
http://support.jodohost.com/showthread.php?p=2595), I thought I was getting an IP free but now I'm basically being told I can't use it :( disappointed again.

This has been discussed over and over again on our forum and is in our FAQ.
We cannot install 3rd party or user made components on a shared server; they pose a considerable risk.
We install components like ASPUpload, ASPImage, Linkpoint, Authorize.net etc. These components are tested and supported by large companies.
We have no idea what exploits exists with these things. We as hosts have a fiduciary responsibility to all our customers and to install something like this we would be negligent in our jobs and be risking serious possible consequences to all our customers.
We have a 30-day money back guarnatee and you can reclaim your money if this was a necessary feature to you.

No, that is not what it means. It means that you can use an IP address as long as you can justify its use. Please read that announcement carefully. This was necessary for us because whenever we take a new Class C IP block, we have to justify the usage for the last block we took

Thanks for the clarification JodoHost. I'm sorry, I should have read your FAQ and IP usage policy carefully. I don't think the ASP component issue is enough to make me shift for at least now. I find the CP and web server speeds excellent
Hope WHT and JodoHost can clear up their issues :)
