I've looked through that site but when I came back, the site was no longer accessible. I wonder if they have closed down. It seems that all CGI files must be CHMOD755. That make me thinks. I wonder if all of my CGI files would work and not give an error 500 page.

Well I just signed up and no problems sofar!!
I am writing a how-to ebook for people new to the internet and want to get their own web site totally free. So because of that I have around 73 free accounts at different host that I am evaluating.
So far on this one they are using sendmail? I know I don't like that (for security reasons). These people are not up-to-date on whats going on I don't think. Along with alot of free host, that is why so many free host sites get hacked.

CyberSorcerer
October 14th, 2003, 19:45
Yea 73!
But I have worked on every control panel, web editor, FTP setup etc that there is out their. That is why I am helping people get started. This ebook is REALLY for total newbies. It would be to basic for the more advanced web designers, but maybe informational.

So, if you've tried most hosts out there, let me ask you a specific question:
What I'm looking for is a host with a nice site builder that'll allow unlimited pages, navbar, mostly text but I want the back ground to look nice and I might want upload an image or two. Other than that I don't really need much space. No ads to distract. Know of anything that might suit my needs?

Well I am not done evaluating yet, so to be fair to all host I will wait until I have given each host a time period to make sure they will be around longer than 6 months and still keep up the same service level.
But to go over your requirements a little more:
A nice site builder that'll allow unlimited pages? You would use your site builder to design your pages. Most site builders insert HTML tags to format your web page. Having unlimited pages has to do more with your space requirement that the amount of pages your allowed to have.
Navbar? Most all host will allow a graphic image map, if you just want you navbar to be text just put it into table cells
A background to look nice? Again most all host give you just a plan white background. If you want an image as a background it is best to design your own or download clip art from the internet.
And upload an image or two? I usually tell people to host images on an image host to save space on a freehost. No sense if wasting space if you don't have to.
I have a question, I see you have 4 host already in your sig. How are they treating you so far?

Yes, I was thinking about that the first time I encountered the problem so I tried using a proxy to get on the server. However, the proxy did no good. Maybe proxies are blocked too, I don't know.

It's not possible to apply. One field says this:
Enter the word as it is shown in the box
The box contains a randomly generated 8-digit number, not text. When I type in that number, I get this error:
Error - Write the text exactly as it is in the picture
So my question: what text?

Just a note. I was just helping somebody out with a contact form script i wrote that they d/loaded and couldn't get to work, their site is on 50free.net and it seems mail() doesn't work, which is actually a good idea to have disabled, but the 50free.com homepage says the accounts unrestricted.
So if you're signing up for mail() it looks like you're out of luck.

Ok everyone, I've came to a conclusion. If you are not using a provider that this site accepts, you will have to use a proxy. The best solution is to use a .com proxy. I think .net will do the job too. I have only used anonymous proxies so I am not sure about others. If you are planning to build a site and concerning visitors from all around the world, this is not the place to get your site hosted... unless you know your visitors can overcome the problem. This sucks, anonymous proxies are accepted and non-anonymous web serfing not accepted? Come on 50free.com. I see no point in blocking connections from other countries.

Were you availible to access without proxies until yestersday? If so, then it is really down. If this is your first time and you are not using a .com, .net, .org provider and from outside the United States, that could be the reason. I was using proxies without problems until yesterday and now I can't. It could be down or have shut proxies from accessing. If they are really thinking about security, I wish they would have shut out proxies instead of providers with foreign domain extension from the beginning. It even shuts out the foreign visitors of users' page by shutting out the providers with foreign domain extension, not a good solution.

The staff replied that all problems have been solved for the down time. However, I feel that other problems have not been solved. The only reason I can think why the site is unaccessible is that there are restrictions against access from foreign domain extention. However, I must check out if some others are still having problem to get on to the site. If you still cannot connect without a proxy, please let me know. I will send the results to the staff to get a better solution. If availible, please tell me the difference while not using a proxy and while using a proxy.
If you do not have any skills to use proxy, use this link to check.

ALL PHP files "must" be CHMOD 755
config.php files should be 777 when doing installation and then changed to 755 after you install your php script
if you dont 755 your files you'll get the error message

50free.com is back online but now new accounts are temporary unavailible. By the way, is there anyone else who is still having problems accessing the site without proxies? I really need help to get info so I could inform the staff about this problem. I tried to play around with the firewall but that was not the reason and I am still unavailible to access the site without proxies. If you still have the same problem, please notice me about it. I will send them a mail about this. If you may, let me know about your provider domain's extention (i.e. .jp, .ch, .us, etc.), nothing else than that I need to know.

yeah, they won't accept til the 30 since they're getting more servers, i think.

If you have files other than certain scripts like .cgi and .pl that requires different chmod, you won't have to set it as 755. I had some .dat files at chmod 666 and it is working fine.

Actually PHP makes no use of the execute flag and doesn't
care if you have it set or not. What is important for PHP
scripts is that they are readable. I usually set all my
PHP scripts to 644.
The one exception is "config.php" for phpBB2. During
installation, the install.php script has to write to the
"config.php" file so I set that to 666 before installation
and then change it to 644 after installation is complete.
For 755, you are thinking about Perl scripts. Unlike PHP,
Perl DOES require you to have the execute flag set.

AMZ, get an account there,
upload some PHP files,
call it from your browser
we guarantee you'll get ERRORS
Heres answers from their F.A.Q
For Perl and CGI scripts the solution is:
to add '-w' after the Perl path in your Perl script. It will look like this:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
This will enable 'warnings' in Perl. Some Perl scripts do not run without this option.
For PHP scripts:
This is because the PHP file has wrong permissions. You probably set 755 to the folder where the PHP files are located, but you did not set 755 to the files. You must select all PHP files and change their permissions, not the folders.
They configured their server to act this way. Thank you.
