I just signed up an account and tried to use the mailing list feature. Then several hours lster (4:20pm pacific time), it's down.

Is this service reliable?

Thanks.

Bravenet has some downtime like everything else. Overall it's reliable, though. I use the mailing list for a couple of accounts and it works well for me.

When I first started my site I used tons of bravenet stuff. I fell in love with their counter and still use one on my main page. They were much smaller than the 1.5 million members that they have now and the downtimes happened less often. But as they grew larger I've found myself removing anything to do with bravenet and not just because of the increased downtimes. I remember when I could check my counter and not get attacked by endless popups and apparently I'm not the only one.

A few months ago I recieved my bravenet newsletter and they mentioned the complaints that some had voiced over banner placements. They mentioned that they could have made the popups viewable to our end users instead of the webmasters who choose to use their services. I paused when I read this because I know it's coming. I offer free webspace and email through my site. The email is run through Everyone.net and anyone who uses one of these accounts is now subjected to popup banners everytime they check their mail. A few months before they claimed that they wouldn't do things like that that tend to anger our end users but the equipment to run their service and sites like bravenet cost hundreds of thousands of dollar a year to maintain and banner ads alone won't cover the cost. I still think bravenet is a good service but don't let it overpower your page.

I totally agree...

I still have my confirmation email from them... August 11, 1999 to be exact... and I used their forums and trackers. Now all they seem to have is ads ads and even more ads. Just about every one of their pages now have a top inline banners.

I used to love Bravenet, but they've been down so much lately. The ads don't bother me too much, but the constant downtime, and errors I get drive me nuts

Agreed. They used to be like beginner's CGI heaven. I still think they are pretty good for beginners, but the old friendly feeling is gone. Began when they revamped the site. Do you remember the cozy old fashioned look? Now it just stinks "big company". :(

They're terrible. They lied about me and deleted my account.
