View Full Version : Forcing banner clicks to the admin only

Some (or most?) free webhosts put a banner/pop-up/pop-under on the user's sites to generate some revenue. Instead of that, it might be a good idea to make the admin of the hosted account click on certain number of banners. I think this was the approach distanthost followed (read somewhere, not sure).
What do the free space providers here have to say about this?

Good for the hosts but bad for the advertisers because they lose money receiving incentive traffic and clicks from same users.

Yep, thats excatly what distanthost.com did and they are out of business.
I think that pretty much speaks for itself. :D

IMO a 'grin' smiley doesn't suit in this context (i.e., when some host closes down)
AFAIK, distanthost didn't shut down 'cos they were getting poor revenue due to the meagre income generated by admins' clicks. It is because of unexpected accident to one of it's key men.
Just that your inference seems not correct to me. Correct me if I am wrong.

I do believe, if my memory serves me, that a number of things caused Distanthost.com to close and one of the main ones being financial difficulty.
As for my :D that was directed towards you with no meaning to my being happy about distanthost.com's closing.

actually, one of the admins took off with all the money and locked the rest of the admins out of the bank account...

My free users aren't forced to click banners, and they have no ads on their site... but i'm making a nice profit :) - free friendly hosting is the way to go :)

just to clarify. Distanthost.com did not close because of financial difficulties. But rather, it's because one of the admin ran off with the money causing them to be unable to foot the bill
In case you're thinking of creating a free webhost, here's my suggestion. Get Google Adsense. They give huge payouts. Then encourage your members(note: encourage not force) them to click the banners to keep the host free. I'm sure if your forum is friendly enough (like distanthost), your members will be more than willing to click those banners for you.

That is fraudulent clicking and will cause your account to be closed down.
If too many of the same people click the ads over and over, they will notice.
Read their TOU and don't believe you won't be caught, you will. I tried it already. :bandit2:
