I am having the same problem that "Gonzo" described in a February 2001 post regarding Netscape (mine is V4.76 running on an NT4 machine) downloading an .exe file to Winamp rather than asking what to do with it. I discovered this posting using Google when looking for some insight to the problem. I also messed up my Explorer file type associations in trying to fix the problem.

The answers posted to his question never offered a solution, only workarounds (use different manager, use different browser, etc.) Does anyone have an answer as to what causes this problem and how to fix it? Have I done something wrong? This only started happening recently, but I can't associate it with anything I might have done.

I have tried looking in "Edit, Preferences, navigator, Applications," but do not find anything that would lead me to believe that an .exe file should download to Winamp.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx,

I don't know, but I think the problem may be Winamp. I don't have your specific problem, but sometimes when I double click a file in Explorer and the file type isn't associated with any program, Winamp tries to open it. Also started all of sudden.

Couldn't right click + Save file as be a work around in your case?

You know how it is...You've been doing something the same way for so long you forget there's other ways to do the same thing. Instead, I reloaded Netscape and now it works OK. It still thinks Winamp is the application to use, but at least it allows me to choose "Save to disk" or "Open the Application." I also think the problem is caused by Winamp. I think I'll contact them and see what they say.

Thanks for your help.

I found the problem!!! (Well, I didn't, but some people smarter than I did) It is apparently a Winamp problem and affects the Netscape viewers registry entry. You can read to whole gory story at: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=23409

They said somewhere in that thread that the problem was fixed in later versions of Winamp, but even if you upgraded to the latest, Winamp doesn't go fix the old problem.
