View Full Version : Free webspace for a 10 MB mp3?

Hi everyone!
Well I guess the title says it all. I'm looking for a free host/server/or whatever to upload a 10 MB mp3 to (actually it's slightly larger than 10 MB) and yes, it is a legal mp3 which I created myself.
I've been searching the web for weeks and registered with a bunch of different hosts but there always seems to be some kind of catch. Some don't allow uploading of mp3's, some have too low a file size limit, etc. The problem is I usually don't find out until I register, try to upload the file and get an error message.:doh!:
I've also tried looking for online storage/backup servers (not sure what you call them) without much luck. Just to be clear, I'm not interested in creating a website as such (although if I have to in order to host the file I will), I'm just looking for somewhere online to store my mp3 for a few friends (and whoever else is interested) to download.
Basically I will need a little over 10 MB of space and a file limit greater than 10 MB. There's really no way around this, even the 10 MB file is of mediocre quality (due to the equipment I used to record it) and it really can't take any more compression.
Sorry about the length of this post. I have very little experience with hosts and I just wanted to make it clear what I'm looking for. Thanks for reading, I appreciate any help that anyone can offer.:-)

Hi Tony,
Seems I submitted my message just a bit too late, as you already had asked around the same as me =)
We even got about the same need and content...
Hey, you make music - I make music, how about we start to
discuss about it?? It's up to you if you like to do that, would
suit me fine.
Pls. send me e-mail whenever you wish:

suggestions ;)

Hi NordicSpitz!:-)
It's nice to meet you too! I wouldn't say that I make music exactly...I'm not a professional, it's just a hobby.
I had actually successfully uploaded my mp3 to a tripod account but when I came back to it later on, it had been deleted. Apparently I had violated their terms and conditions. I didn't know what I'd done wrong so I read through them and it says that you can't just store files on their server without creating a website.
So now I'm looking for another. I suppose I could try opening another tripod account but I don't know if they allow that...and to be honest I really can't be bothered building a website, I just want somewhere to put this file.
Anyway thanks for the reply! Let's see what suggestions people make.:-)

its not that hard to make a website
just do this:
<html>
<head>
<title>YOUR TITLE FOR BLUE BAR UP TOP</title>
</head>
<body>
<a href="http://www.HOST.com/you/filename.filetype>NAME</a>
</body>
</html>
You could put more in, but for the basics it'll display a white page with that link on it.
Pm me, I may be able to design you a site.

Why not host the mp3 on your own computer?
There are many free solutions like www file share (http://www.wfshome.com/).

Hi,
Thank your kind answer and a very good suggestion.
However, I am not able to do that since my ISP does
not allow computers to play the role of server under
their service. I have asked this around and it seems
to be a very common rule where I live.
They have suggested me of buying such option from
a hosting company. Now, my need is relatively small
and that is why I am not eager to start paying regulary
just to keep a couple of files available. Not before the
download amounts would start to increase.
This is the whole reason I am asking the help here.
Also, I am not able to keep up my comp up on 24 basis,
that is the biggest problem I think.
Cheers!

Usually i dont do this. If it doesn't consume more than 1GB data transfer, i can host your MP3 temporarily(which means till i can support it). Get back to me, if you're interested.

N-S i feel you can try to get a paid host.
you will only upload one mp3, and most free host will not allow any files like mp3 and wma, which will cost alot transfer:classic2:

Hello.
Thank you very much for your answer.
I am starting to think the same way. Maybe I should
consider if my music is worth putting out for public and
if - how much am I ready to pay for that.
Ofcourse I understand those who are trying to do some
business and make it worth doing - they need to get some
money to run a service, don't they? Then are people who
just do not seem to understand that there is no such thing
as a free meal ...

if you live in US or Canada 1&1 (www.1and1.com) seems to be the best solution right now, it worked for me when i needed a very specific php setup for a script to work and it should be good for your mp3 as well
500mb storage
5 gb transfer i think
anyways they are professional and have a sweet promotion for 3 years free, if you dont mind a day or two setup time it will work.
btw: word of mouth on forums say they have slow/bad support but since its free i dont complain

I find 1&1 (www.1and1.com) to be damn slow.

Hi, and thanks for your offer, sounds fair indeed!
it must be YOUR music
if copyrighted it must be your copywrite
I would agree with those terms. As said it will be mine all mine.
I can drop all premissions to zero and stop the downloading of a file
I suppose you mean that you are holding yourself the right to
limit bandwith/access? Well that is understandable ofcourse.
Hope to hear of you soon!

HI there,
I had a more comprehensive look on that 1and1 service and
what it does got to offer. Well, that would look like a very
good bargain indeed. Too bad I live outside both U.S. and CAN, which makes it impossible for me to register :(
Again,

Hi,
Just checked their service and it looks like this:
"Please note that as of March 25, 2002 'Public' folders will no longer be available. Only people whom you've granted permission will be able to access your Briefcase files. More help."
It will narrow down things a bit, don't u agree?
