View Full Version : Ok, need a new web host

I need a new web host.

I've had lots of problems with my existing one. I have stuck with them because I imagined that by working through these problems together, I have made them more understanding of my requirements. But they keep springing new issues on me - so it's time to cut my losses.

I have some very specific requirements (nothing out of the ordinary really):

What I do is advanced Content Management Systems (with enriched user friendly GUIs for making websites/e-shops etc.). A lot of stuff is written in Flash, and I'll be porting applications to Macromedia Central. (by the way, my shopping-cart software does not collect credit card numbers - it just links into paypal) So what I need from a host is as follows:

1. Prompt and friendly technical support. I'm not asking for free programming advice - so don't accuse me of it as an excuse not to answer my question. If my question related to the security of my website - it is in both of our best interests to answer it. We both want things water tight. Don't just ignore questions, or bluff if you don't know the answer.

2. A host that grows with me. If I want to up the capacity later (storage/bandwidth), the ability to move up seemlessly to another plan.

3. Unix - definitely NOT a windows server!

4. mySQL, PHP, Perl, and I may use Server-side Java and Python in the future. I also use the ImageMagick library - and expect it to work ALL the time.

5. ssh terminal access is useful (within a safe shell is fine).

6. Easily set up a discussion forum.

7. Allow me to allow users to upload .jpg files using standard HTML/PHP with security checks.

8. People using a CMS potentially could produce inappropriate content (hasn't hapenned yet - but it is with exceptions like this that you discover how friendly and reasonable your host is). Don't close the whole service down. We can work out a process to remove their files, and block that user in the future.

9. At the moment my CMS creates a directory for each user of my service. It would be cool, but not essential to be able to create sub-directories on the fly. It means that the url that user receives is tidier.

10. I want to allow users to buy domain names and map them onto the url (within my account) of their files. Either allow me this facility, or set your own reasonable price, and we can create an easy to use form so that customers can buy this domain service from you.

11. I'd prefer to buy Australian if possible - but expect European standards.

12. Work through any issues professionally, in cooperation, employing calm common sense. If a technical problem was due to something that you didn't set up right - tell me what you did to fix it. I'll treat it as a learning exercise, not an admission of guilt.

At the moment, I'm paying US$10, AU$20 per month for 100Mb storage. 5000Mb per month bandwidth.

Take a look at www.enhancedhost.com, www.myacen.com and/or www.iminteractive.net :)

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll investigate those leads in more detail. I'd welcome any further leads, especially from the customer's point of view, as the biggest failing of my existing Australian web host was their inappropriate customer service skills more than their technical failings. So just looking at technical specs doesn't really inform me whether I'll be happy with them.

I've also thought of two more requirements that it is worth listing. (It is useful for me also to make these list, becaue I want to ensure that my new webhost can do all these things before I sign up with them).

13. One of my CMS solutions allows users to create their own HTML newsletters and manage their own mailing lists. If there are limits with sending out automated email, I am happy to agree these in advance. Or build 'limiters' into my software. Send out a batch, pause, send out a batch etc. It is a condition of using this service that their customers can opt-in, can opt-out, and it is not used for spam.

14. I want to secure a subdomain or directory, through which I communicate with server-side using POST or GET forms. Just to protect user passwords. There is no need to secure the whole site in this way, as that will only slow things down unnecessarily.

- Yes
2. A host that grows with me. If I want to up the capacity later (storage/bandwidth), the ability to move up seemlessly to another plan.
- Once every month
3. Unix - definitely NOT a windows server!
- Linux ok?
4. mySQL, PHP, Perl, and I may use Server-side Java and Python in the future. I also use the ImageMagick library - and expect it to work ALL the time.
- We are looking into installing java (JSP) on the server but we currently have no plans with python.
5. ssh terminal access is useful (within a safe shell is fine).
- If you tell me you ordered from referal threw this forum I will wave the $30 setup but I do require a Pcture ID (IE: Drivers lis) This is security policy.
6. Easily set up a discussion forum.
- Yes we have auto installers
7. Allow me to allow users to upload .jpg files using standard HTML/PHP with security checks.
- Yes
8. People using a CMS potentially could produce inappropriate content (hasn't hapenned yet - but it is with exceptions like this that you discover how friendly and reasonable your host is). Don't close the whole service down. We can work out a process to remove their files, and block that user in the future.
- That's fine but if it's still there 12 hours after you are notified your account will be cancelled and not refunded.
9. At the moment my CMS creates a directory for each user of my service. It would be cool, but not essential to be able to create sub-directories on the fly. It means that the url that user receives is tidier.
- Sure
10. I want to allow users to buy domain names and map them onto the url (within my account) of their files. Either allow me this facility, or set your own reasonable price, and we can create an easy to use form so that customers can buy this domain service from you.

11. I'd prefer to buy Australian if possible - but expect European standards.
- I am american based id that's ok.
12. Work through any issues professionally, in cooperation, employing calm common sense. If a technical problem was due to something that you didn't set up right - tell me what you did to fix it. I'll treat it as a learning exercise, not an admission of guilt

- Mailing lists are built into cPanel.

- You can set users and passwords to certain domains if that's what you mean

My smalliest plan is:
500mb Disk Space
10GB Bandwith
$6/month

That's $8 AUD is that ok?

Well your request is reasonable for any legit hosting provider.

Some of the things you requested I didn't really see the point of asking for but.. to each his own.

Some thoughts:

1) Any host that gives SSH access could potentially be brought down by an abuser (keep this in mind when asking for it).

2) Imagemagick is a pain in the rear end to keep updated and working right. Consider using GD instead (works pretty much all the time without problems).

3) Server-side Java and Python.. no. Tomcat eats server resources like no tomorrow and unless you know specifically what you are doing it is a security hazard beyond the likes of Perl. Python I just have to ask.. why? Learn PHP, you'll be doing yourself a favor.

As for the rest of it, I see no reason why all of that is perfectly doable for a good reasonable price.

With those thoughts you might want to check out:

Good luck to you! :bandit2:
