View Full Version : best way to make URLs invisible and hidden?

I need help.

I have an online diary and I only want my friends to view it. I have the URL for it. To hide it I've created a bravenet password gate which is OK but not very secure. Plus I've used URL redirection, a fake Error page and more to ensure others can't read it.

(see it here (http://www.esckey.now.nu/))

Is there a simple way to display a URL without letting the visitor know what URL they are viewing? I know you can shroud URLs using redirectors but they still come up in things like the HTML source and the bar IE has at the bottom. So is there a way?

#EDIT# By the way I am aware that LiveJournal and other blogs have a friends only/password view option, but I don't want to use that OK?

First you need to ask yourself why hidding your journal is so important....

Then you need to ask yourself how much security are you really wanting....

There is only so much security you can add until it will just get annoying. People aren't going to want to enter 20 passwords to read about your life.

If your target audience is your friends, think about how they will feel with all the security.

I would say unless you have A LOT of friends (say hundreds or even thousands), so if you don't want OTHER people to view your journal, you shouldn't publish it on a website. You may want to try alternatives like an e-mail list or even set up your very own intranet. Just my two cents.

Not totally, the closest you'd probally get is using a header to direct to the real url and having the page in a window with no address bar, but i don't see why you don't just protect a directory with .htaccess if you only want certain people to view it?
