What is a lamer? How do you become one? Is it fashionable?

I saw some really kewl guyz 1nce. They fancied themselves as hackerz and typ3D eveRytHiNg in tHiz rath3R p3culIaR (but kewl) manner. I think I want 2b one of them.

I went to the lame translator:
http://www.ib1B|i0.0rg/dbArberI/|aME/ (http://www.ibiblio.org/dbarberi/lame/)

and learned to type like them. Then I started a warez n crackz n hackerz site n guestbook. Then I lost all sense of grammar, doing everything possible to aggravate the average netizen, including calling myself a global capitalist n spamming people n having a splash page on my site with a 500k image of a squashed cat.

But every1 ignored me. I don't geddit.

Seriously, what exactly is a 'lamer' ?
Is it an american term similar to the english 'plonker' or is it specific to the internet. It's just that someone called me a lamer and banned me from an IRC channel (and rightly so :o)

A lamer is a bit different than a plonker.

You are kind of lame if you pretend to know lots about something but really you dont. or type like you did or clame to be elite. all sorts of things contribute to lamerism

Lame? Me? Really! ;)
Want to have a go? I made it easy for you. It should be 32 bits.
If you can hack it you win the first prize - which is the privilege to teach me how to do it. :D

Thankyou for a most interesting insight - especially from you, Gayowulf.

PS I have no interest in advertising said lame text converter, I just thought it was funny.

I thought it was fun. But I'll never forgive you for what you did to your cat. ;)

i did 1 of those tricks on napster chat, i told everyone that while they are downloading, if they push ctrl+alt+Del then you will get 3 times the speed and then i see like 200 ppl leave the room, that was real funny!!!! lol

Usually napster chat rooms never have any more than 100 people in them. I see 144t0 people saying stuff like that all the time, and *no one* falls for it. get a life :)

I talked to one of my classmates on MSN and I said that I would hack him so his computer wouldn't work. He's so nice to me in class now, giving me paper and lending me his pens and all that...

I wonder why?
