I'm basically computer illiterate, so I don't know how to do this. Anyway, I just did a virus scan using McAfee Freescan (http://msn.mcafee.com) and it came up as having three viruses. (However, when I run AVG free, it comes up as no infected files). So, on the virus information, under removal instructions, I get this..
"All Users:
Use specified engine and DAT files for detection and removal.
Additional Windows ME/XP removal considerations"
I click on the link for engine and DAT files and I get a long list of files. How am I supposed to find out which one to download to fix this problem?

not quite sure, i would prob need to see it for myself..

you might try downloading a demo copy of McAfee Virus Scan and see if it detects the virus's and removes them without any problems.

download f-prot for dos (free):
http://www.f-prot.com/download/download_fpdos.html
(info for the software:
http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/dos/)

run it from your windows Command Prompt
(Start -> Run -> type "cmd") (you use XP right? for windows versions older than 2000 I think you do "command" instead)

then say if you extracted the files in the zip into C:\F-prot
then you'd do:
cd \F-prot
f-prot

do a scan of your computer there, it should either automatically try to clean the virus for you or ask you what to do. sometime's f-prot can't clean it, you just have to remove that file.

Or you can:

1)download AVG Antivirus (free) - I highly recommend there software. They have defintion updates every 1-2 days!

2) reformat your drive

3) Sometimes you can get rid of a virus by just cleaning out your registry. Google the viruses you have and see if they tell you where they are located in the registry. If they do export your registery and then delete the registry keys that have the viruses.

If you are using AVG, go to the site and get the latest updates, don't worry about which files, just get the latest update. Then configure your AVG program to do automatic updates. I have mine set for once every 5 days. Make it for a time that you are likely to be online every day so that it can keep track. (No point setting it for 5am when you are never online till 5pm, for example.)
