DISTRAUGHT Britney Spears burst into tears hours after marrying, and wailed: "Oh my God what have I done!"
She then fell into groom Jason Alexander's arms, adding: "I'm so sorry. This was such a stupid idea. It's all my fault."
Britney, 22, who had spent the night before drinking with Jason, broke down at an extraordinary post wedding party gatecrashed by her furious mother.
Meanwhile Jason, 22, was told by the star's head of security, Big Mo: " "What you guys did was totally f****ing stupidly ridiculously insane. I wanna kill you right now. We're doing earthquake control because of you."
A source said: "Jason kept saying 'I'm sorry, I got drunk'. There was nothing else he could say."
Hours later Britney arranged for the marriage to be annulled. The annulment will be made official when courts open today.
Britney and childhood friend Jason married early on Saturday morning after a night on the tiles in Las Vegas.
Wearing torn jeans and a baseball cap, the singer was escorted to the altar of the gambling city's famous Little White Wedding Chapel by her limo driver. No family members are thought to have been present. The couple and about 10 guests, including Britney's manager and brother, then moved to Nines steak house for a bash thrown by owner George Maloof.
But Britney and Jason, by now clearly regretting their impulsive marriage, were in no mood to celebrate. Our source said: "It was awful. This was the big comedown.
"There was a real feeling of sadness. No one was dancing. Everyone was on a downer. It was almost as if someone had died.
"Even when the champagne came out there was no one going 'Hey! Congratulations!' People just had their heads down as if they couldn't believe what was going on.
"Britney spent most of the time going to the bathroom. She was in floods of tears, her face was puffy and bloated.
"She and Jason kept going to the bar. She was hugging him and they were both crying their eyes out.
"They kept apologising to each other, with each blaming themselves for what had happened. It looked as though they were still hammered from the night before.
"The only person smiling was Maloof. He couldn't pay for this kind of publicity. "
About an hour later Britney's enraged mother Lynne, who had flown in from Louisiana, arrived.
The source: "That's when the s**t really hit the fan. She was going crazy. She was blaming Maloof for what had happened, screaming 'How could you encourage my child to get married?'
"She was also laying into Britney and Jason, asking 'What the hell have you guys been doing? She couldn't believe they were still drinking. Then she and Britney ended up crying."
Britney and Jason are said to have hatched their wedding plot while partying at the Ghostbar club in the Palms Casino Hotel.
They were driven to the White Chapel but turned away because they did not have a marriage licence. They then headed to the county marriage bureau.
Deputy marriage commissioner Joyce Singer dismissed claims they were drunk. She said: "Britney came in about 4.30am. She was sober as we're not allowed to grant a licence to anyone under the influence. They were fine."
Bureau worker Linda Wells added: "They were deadly serious. They weren't laughing as if it was a prank. Everyone here was stunned." The couple then returned to the chapel where they married an hour later.
Later on Saturday the regretful newly-weds signed an annulment in the presence of a Las Vegas lawyer.
Under Nevada law, Britney could have applied to end her marriage on the grounds of intoxication or that it was an impulsive mistake.
Yesterday the singer was believed to be holed up in her £6,000-a-night suite at the Palms hotel off the Vegas Strip.
She arrived in Vegas on Wednesday after holidaying in the Caribbean, checking in to the Palms under the name of Alotta Warmheart. Later, she was spotted at various clubs. College student Jason grew up with Britney in the small Bible-belt town of Kentwood, Louisiana, where he lives with his divorced father Dennis.
Yesterday bemused Dennis spent most of the day at his isolated bungalow discussing the wedding with Britney's father Jamie.
Dennis said: "Jason was supposed to be spending New Year with us then said at the last minute he was going to Vegas with Britney. Hell, I don't blame him. I'm leaving it to him to say what he wants to say."
Refusing congratulations Jamie spat chewing tobacco on the ground, and said simply: "There was no wedding."
