Hi. I'm helping a friend set up a website for an organization she's starting. She's not exactly rolling in money, so I suggested a free webhost and ended up with the job of finding one. I've used the search engine, and have some possibilities there, but I'd like some human input.
The site will contain resources for a particular community in the Fort Worth, Texas region. There are perhaps forty people I would expect to log onto it in the first month, just to check it out. After that, it could grow very quickly or not - and you could probably have figured that out for yourselves. Basically, I'm not sure how many hits to expect once the thing has been up for a bit.
At the start, the site will be very basic - mostly HTML, no MySQL or perl or anything. I'd be surprised if we went over about 10M for the pages. Eventually, though, I'm going to want access to more sophisticated tools - like the aforementioned MySQL, perl, etc, and I'd rather not have to migrate everything to another web host if I can avoid it.
I have no good idea what kind of traffic to expect. The first few web hosts I found offered 500M for free, which seemed reasonable to me. Then a friend told me that her site, which doesn't get a lot of traffic, is limited to 3G and she's constantly being told that she's gone over her limit. So: What kind of bandwidth does the average website of the type I'm discussing need? I have no feel for that at all.
I would also appreciate any recommendations for a host that anyone cares to give. If I've left anything out, let me know. And if this falls under the "newbie question, frequently asked, we're bored by it now" then forgive me. I am new at this.
