Hi. I just checked out both digitalrice and f2s and wonder if there's anything I should know about them before I commit to one. Is one better than the other? I like how they both offer a CGI-BIN and no ads for free.

Have there been any problems with them recently? Which is better? I hope someone who used them before can help me out.

Thanks... :)

I heard once that digitalrice owns all the content u put up on their servers... not too sure about that tho.

As for f2s, if u need sql, they only give 5MBs of it

How come http://www.digitalrice.com has access to all directories?
Is the site screwed up? Check it out. I see all the members names and their cgi-bin.

I'm using them both, and I'm quite content. My experience is that F2s is a lot faster when using FTP upload, but it has that strange server cache problem. They both suffer from server downtime occasionally, but that's inevitable I guess.
By the way, Digitalrice is acting weird at the moment

I have two sites on the new F2S servers. When you sign up you are warned that they are experimental and that if you are worried about the server being down you shouldn't sign up with them.

The sendmail program keeps breaking down as well. It can take days for them to fix it.

I must admit that I am quite happy all things said. Down time is usually only an hour or so and I was warned.

I suspect the sendmail is often down because some people use f2s to send bulk mail (whether it's a legit mailing list or spam). Either it clogs the mail server, and they delete all the mail when it does, or they intentionally disable it. As such, your legitimate feedback forms, etc, wind up not working either.

Otherwise it would really be one of the best free hosts around with just about everything and no ads.

I signed up with f2s yesterday.......
My site is still not up. I can't access the ftp either.
How long do I have to wait?

Here's what it says on their TOS. In a nutshell, legalese aside, I think it says that you still own and have rights to your content, but you grant them license to freely republish your content to other entities as they see fit, in whatever form and with whatever modifications they wish. Is this qualification unique to DR, or do other hosts have a similar TOS clause?

6. CONTENT SUBMITTED TO DIGITALRICE
Digitalrice does not claim ownership of the Content you place on your Digitalrice Site. By submitting Content to Digitalrice for inclusion on your Digitalrice Site, you grant Digitalrice the world-wide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify, adapt and publish the Content solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting your Digitalrice Site on Digitalrice's Internet properties. This license exists only for as long as you continue to be a Digitalrice homesteader and shall be terminated at the time your Digitalrice Site is terminated. You acknowledge that Digitalrice does not pre-screen Content, but that Digitalrice and its designees shall have the right (but not the obligation) in their sole discretion to refuse or remove any Content that is available via the Service. Without limiting the foregoing, Digitalrice and its designees shall have the right to remove any Content that violates the TOS or is otherwise objectionable. You agree that you must evaluate, and bear all risks associated with, the use of any Content, including any reliance on the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of such Content.

Geocities tried this once before, but there was a huge hue and cry over it. In the end, they disabled it for their US signups (those terms still exist if you sign up for certain non-US countries - ie, when you sign up and you choose a non-US country as your residence).

The terms basically allow them to take your content, remove your copyright information, add their own, sell it off as their own stuff and other such things. It's usually not a good idea to host with web hosts with such terms, IMO.
