If I install a personal firewall on my pc at work, will that make me invisible to my LAN administrator? As far as time on the web.

No. A firewall on your workstation will block selected incoming packets AT your computer, but all data, whether incoming, or outgoing passes through the LAN gateway and can be logged from there. Incoming packets must pass through the gateway firewall before reaching yours, and outgoing packets have to pass through the gateway in order to reach the web.

i remember you trying to get around a time limit before (or someone was) why not unplug your lan and plug into a phone line and dial in

Because LAN is fast, and Dialup is slow. NOt all workplace computers will have a normal dialup modem either.

I tried that, but the plug for the LAN cable is modified for a custom connector. There isn't any other plugs for a phone line cable.
Some of the people here are using HTTPORT3SN, but that only covers where you surf to. I only go to safe sites such as this one, but its hard to stay within our 15 minutes internet time limit, particularly during my lunch hour.
Thanks,
Mike

since you guys are toking about firewall, i have a question. i have a cable connection connected to 2 comps with a router. but if i were to use my internet with the router, i will not be able to go ms netmeeting or sent files with those msn or yahoo messenger. but if i just connection the cable modem to my pc, everything will be fine. why? izzit the firewall problem?

yes the router automaticaly sets one up
most routers have firewalls included and the default is to accept connections from no ports, so look in your manual and see how to change it.

Yes, you'll need to do something called port forwarding (also referred to as port mapping). Most of the newer hardware router/firewalls have this option in their administration area.
However, because of the nature of NAT and firewall, you will only be able to forward the port to one IP address on your LAN. So basically, only one computer can send files with msn and yahoo messenger, unless you change the IP it gets forwarded to in your router's admin area each time. It kinda sucks, but it's a lot better than having an unsecure network.
Also, you'll need to setup your computers to obtain a static IP from the router. So if your router is currently setup as a DHCP server, you'll need to disable that.

Are you confusing NICs with modems?
