My board sucks! No one goes there!
The most important essence regarding the success of any board is time. patience is a virtue . One day, no one will be at your board and the next they'll be 5 members there. Time allows the spread of word of mouth. Just remember, as long as your board is appealing, people will eventually start piling in.

But we can't just rely on 'time' can we?
Of course not silly !

Ensuring my board has target market appeal.
Something I always found a great help, was visiting other peoples board, which I loved and respected. Learn how those boards are managed and implement the same techniques on your boards. I mean, if it works for them, its gotta work for you too right?

As long as you remember who you target market is.
Here are some key factors to a solid forum:
Skins - The forum has to be skinned to perfection. Remember your market! If you're running a Carebears forum, you don't wanna use a Matrix skin,
Management - Before members start posting, make sure everything is in order, including your user groups, forum permissions and board rules,
A good starting point is to create several different usernames... Perhaps 20 or so and like 5 posts for each. This will give users the impression your board is up and coming.

Starting Off Tips:
Don't start off with too many forums. Start off, at first, with a maximum of
3 Categories and 2 Forums for each. Otherwise the users will feel overwhelmed. As you expand, so can your forums.
Here are some community tips:
Holds daily/weekly competitions, giving users the chance to compete for prices,
Hold staff recruiting topics. Once a user has staff status on your boards its nature for them to post more as they hold status and responisiblity at your board.
Lets promote.
Now that everything is setup, it's time to get your board noticed and out there, for the rest of the world to see...

There are several different types of advertising. I will try and tackle them all.

External... Search engine indexing etc:
I will explain how to get your board displayed on some of the worlds most powerful search engines, such as Google etc.
Before jumping straight in and submitting our site, lets set us up some META tags.

What are META Tags?

Meta tags are a crucial part of getting your webpages rated better in search engines. Many search engines now require them before they will spider your site.


I won't go into META tags in too much detail here. But will provide you with the following links:

Once you've got them, you must paste them into your:
Admin CP > Skinning & Styles > Board Wrappers > Javascript.

Now thats all setup, its time to submit your forums to the big boys.

Affiliate with partner boards
Enter your site in 'Top Site' lists.
Advertise your forum, in others forums and wherever possible
Also, find some free Board Directories. Forum-Search.com is a great place to submit your board!

Also, don't forget to get your board displayed on the InvisionFree Board Directory.

And another thing which I find quite useful, is traditional word-of-mouth. A good tool to help promote word of mouth is the refer-a-friend script.

Remember. Promotion never stops. You have to keep pushing your board up there. But all of the above is useless if you board is not appealing.
