It was a database error. Todd fixed it as soon as he was informed.

Make me admin, I would have had the database up and running within minutes of it going down.

Bad Todd.. Bad Todd!

Those who are able to inform him weren't around. My excuse is that I was asleep ;)
Here is a part of the email from Todd after he fixed it.

Thanks for the report this was the first one I saw.

The forum gave that error for 8 hours or more if I am correct, I could be wrong though.

Felt funny not being able to visit... :crying5:

What made it go down in the first place?

mysql may have crashed and it didn't restart correctly.

Because of that email address, I actually thought someone DDoSed fws.net

mysql is monitored, so when that fails, Todd is right onto it. This was something a bit different (even though it gave the database error message), that isn't monitored. I am sure Todd will explain the technicalities of it when he can :biggrin2:

TODD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason I didn't fix this one faster was really a two fold problem:
1. MySQL continued to run but connections were failing. Our monitoring script was watching MySQL to ensure it was running and it was so it never paged us.
2. I wasn't notified of any errors until Jan sent me an email and then I handled it right away. Thank you Jan for sending that!

Since then we've now wrote a custom script that not only watches to make sure the process is running but it actually fetches information from a database and ensures the operation passed. This way even if the process doesn't physically crash if it times out or fails to complete the request at all we should know.

The FreeWebspace.net site remained operation but the forum was of course down. This should address the problem so it doesn't happen again. It's still rather frustrating as I was around and able to fix the problem but I wasn't aware that a problem existed.

I'll take a look at the error message to see what email address it was giving as I didn't see any FWS error messages in my email. Thanks for bringing that up.

Sorry about the down time. In the future if you ever notice anything like this feel free to email "ASAP" at "Freewebspace.net" and I'll set that up to page me. Thanks everyone.

No worries Todd. Good job bringing everything back up, but I think anyone who was really worried about the forum being down for so long has too much time on their hands.

Like me, heh I had the page open like all day refreshing, and nothing for a few hours.
Kinda made me sad, as I like to read it while doing work.

Felt like I had lost a limb, well almost. . .

Usually fws is a good read for it's drama, and flames to anoying people, which I tend to find hilarious. which blankverse is usually part of - the comedy king !!

People have a problem with the fact that the admin email address was bizarre and no one recognized it.

That was actually a working address but it was sent to another systems administrator and not myself. I've now changed it to ensure I'm always included on such messages.

Ok, but hopefully we will never have to use it.
