Lately I've been trying to use my FTP programs but they aren't connecting.
SmartFTP says:

A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

WS_FTP says:

Connection failed -

I don't understand what got into them... they just stopped working. :confused2 Can someone tell me what's going on?

are you connecting to just one or many different servers?

firewall?

try connecting to other servers too to check if the problem is at your end or not

Unfortunatly, I believe the problem IS at my end. I've tried 3 servers.... Is a firewall possible?

A firewall could be stopping your FTP program connecting out. Mine stops every connection (inc. basics like IE, Norton Liveupdate, etc.) unless i've set it to grand the app. full access

Aww.... How does one set their firewall to grant full access?

well i've used two firewall apps, tiny personal firewall and mcafee personal firewall plus, and the first time it's tried to connect, a message has come up asking whether to allow it access or block it. or you can just open the program, go to the list with the programs and set it there. The best thing to do would be to go through your firewalls help docs and see if it explains it there.

Sadly I know that I've run these FTP programs many times before... It just stopped working out of the blue.

Do you know which firewall it is - and is it your own computer or one in a school/college/workplace ?

It's my own computer... Wait a minute, the FTP clients don't work on my other computer (also in my house) either. Strange... I'm not so sure it's a firewall either. I don't even think I have a firewall program.

Possibly a DSL/ADSL router ?

:shocked2: Ah, I think that makes sense now. I believe my router is firewalled.. I can't really fix it though...

:-) You should be able to use a web interface or at least telnet in - which kind of router do you have ?

Kitsune Devil

I've tried both. No response.. or at least that's what it says. Router? As in "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC"? :confused2

That's just a network card not a router, look over your programs groups and see if you have a firewall installed.

I've checked--- nothing. Isn't there another alternative?
