Hi I am looking for a web host. This would be my first one and I am not sure of everything that I would need. I basically would like to use it to practice designing sites (studio mx). I want a reliable host that is relatively fast. I am a student, so unfortunately a budget goes with that. I cannot afford above $6/mth. Any advice or direction would be helpful. Thanks!

If you are looking to deploy studio mx sites, I'd recommend a windows host so you could take advantage of Studio MX's database (for MS Access and MS SQL), flash remoting and Cold fusion features..

I have extra web space on a professionally managed server that I have been renting out. In fact, I originally set up my hosting site so that I can offer packages to friends of mine who wanted to tinker with their web-designing skills, and for myself to play around with PHP. The hosting you need will not need a great deal of size nor will it need a great deal of bandwidth, unless of course you are transferring files and or a lot of pictures. Most of the small sites I see use less than 1 GB of transfer and much less than 100 MB of space. Buying any more than this would most likely be overkill. Beyond that, most of what is offered here seems to be similar, with a few options differing from host to host. What I hope sets my hosting apart is the level of personal service you'll get because I don't work with a large number of clients. I can offer you the following package, or if you have any suggestions, I can easily make custom packages (all of which would of course be without banners. Another reason why I do my own hosting is because I was sick of free hosts and all their banner gimmicks):

100 MB storage
1 GB transfer
5 domains hosted (or more for free), plus subdomains (ex. bob.mydomain.com)
PHP 4.3.x and MySql 4.0.x (in case you feel like tinkering with PHP)
Perl & CGI support

Unlimited? Well, I think he means, that he wont limit you on space/bandwidth, it does not mean he has unlimited space/bandwidth.
