Where can I get a good search engine for both the web and my site? (for free, of course!)

It pretty much depends on what you want.

Were you thinking of a CGI hosted script or do you want your own script (ie your web host supports CGI scripts)?

It also depends on the size of your site. For small sites with little traffic, a script that simply searches your site at run time would be fine. If your site is large, get a script that pre-indexes your site. When the visitor searches, the engine merely looks into the index. These engines usually require a bit more effort on your part - everytime you update your site, you have to remember to re-index it.

A couple of good engines that can handle larger sites are:
http://perlfect.com/freescripts/search/
http://www.xav.com/scripts/xavatoria/index.html

I know that Matt Wright's script does the search of your documents at run-time. It's easy to install.

There are lots more. You can find a number listed on

No - he wanted to install his own CGI script, not use a CGI hosted service, which is what FreeFind is.

<edit: fixed typo>

No. They're Perl scripts. So far, the PHP scripts that I've checked did not have the same feature set and maturity that the Perl search scripts (particularly the Perlfect Search and Xavatoria search engines) have. Perhaps given a little more time, they will. You can also write your own, but it's probably more hassle than it's worth, since there are so many off-the-shelf Perl scripts floating around.
