I'm sure it's a April Fool gag as it's April the 1st, it's a tradition in the UK to play jokes on that day :biggrin2:

:-) yep but they felt they had to put this '<!-- There is no secret html on this page -->' in the html to stop people looking :biggrin2:
I'm sure it's a gag - say 200,000 people sign up (not a lot) at 1Gig each - phew datacenter for free :-)

Yep I know Wired - if you look at the page it's all over the place as far a style sheet goes, but when you look at the info on it looking bad it's ok, I think their all having a go :ditsy2:

I heard about this on the radio this morning at work, where they would use their adsense banners in each email sent out to basically advertise what is said in the email. If this is an april fools joke, I think it will make google look bad.

When someone showed me Google's press release (http://www.google.com/press/pressrel/gmail.html) about gmail yesterday, I thought it was a joke too, as the date says "April 1, 2004 UTC". Even reading some of the descriptions google uses for the service, some of which are kinda funny, it further reinforced my belief it was a joke.
It was sent through the AP wires, etc. We thought this would be an awesome joke. But after reading that wired article... it does seem rather serious.. :o Google's insane.. but yet, the best :P i'd figure that even 100MB was insane! when they considered how much email someone would have in a decade, they've must've included spam (and not minimal spam, either).... my email account just has 2-4 mb... :confused2
i dont know about the idea of eliminating folders, though.. :'(

Apparantly this year's April fools joke was a google job posted for their lunar office (http://www.google.com/jobs/lunar_job.html).
Regardless, it sounds believable if only for the fact that Google needs to find a way to create loyalty with its user base. The current internet hype is search technology and if a better search engine comes along tomorrow, there's nothing that keeps people from switching from one to the other.
Microsoft has msn.com, hotmail, messenger, can build searching into its OS. Yahoo has its portal, own messenger, email, etc.
Google has nothing besides its search technology to lure people back and both Microsoft and Yahoo are currently working on perfecting their own respective search engines.
The 1Gb is most likely just a marketing incentive, there is no way you're going to fill that and even if you did, it would be a nightmare to navigate and find anything in.
(Also, if it's real. The whole real vs hoax debate sure put Gmail on the map with no costs to them :-))

well, google's search engine and cwarlers are far superior to other ones. i think yahoo just used to be user-submitted indexes. and msn's engine always used someone else's engine  .ive never regarded msn's engine as any good, anyway.
google seems a tad better than yahoo and msn in the fact that not only does it have the best engine and crawlers and has archives most, or a big part, of the internet, its page layout is simple and easy to use. it's not too cluttered or filled tons of ads like yahoo or msn.
and google just doesnt have the "search engine". it just uses the search engine for everything :P .. it also has image search, a news directory, a usenet directory, textad service, translators, merchandise search (froogle), and then those little features (cache, view as html, translate webpage, etc., which i believe google had first), then weird features like a calculator or glossary or spell check. http://labs.google.com/, http://www.google.com/help/features.html, http://www.google.com/options/index.html
im not sure if google will ever go away. it's got an uber amount of engineers who constantly work on improving google and adding services. and lets not forget pagerank, which also makes google godly.
oddly enough.. google has a store. http://www.googlestore.com/:P

1GB of space for email, mannn, really cant believe it. By the way, my email at Outlook Express is 250MB, so 1GB is nothing unless they have file size restriction.

They don't even have to earn back the money, it's part of an incentive to bind people to other google activities which are profitable.
Webbased email has definite advantages, but at the end of the day I still prefer a local copy. A web based interface is simply no good for locating things quickly.

I'm guessing that google initially will give you a small quota and then slowly increase it as neccesary, maving people around servers if they get too big. Surely they're not stupid enough to give full 1GB quotas from the start...

the 1gig offer is real, however you should consider the fact that you read in their privacy policy.
its basically they'll read your emails to find out about your interests and send advertisement...
http://www.google.com/gmail/help/privacy.html
1 gig for privacy, a trade off in the corners if you don't look too careful, nonetheless, google hasn't stop amazing me with its surprises...

So? How do you think Yahoo Spam Filter works? Or Hotmail's Spam Filter? Or even your HOSTS spam filter? It has to *read* your emails. Google just took it a tad farther and will provide ads that share the interest of your e-mails.
But my question is, what if I get a lot of viagara spam mail, will all the ads display viagara links for me??

Or the fact that they're allowed to link together your email on gmail, with keywords you search for on google itself.
As a whole their current policy is in violation of European privacy laws, it should be interesting to see how Google handles that.
Besides all that Gmail is patented by a UK company.
Someone at google didn't do their homework :confused5
