Hello there.
Is there any way to get a domain name totally free. I've heard of all these 'free' domain name sites, but haven't found anything. Any Help?

Like many people have mentioned on this board before, "free" domains usually aren't worth the trouble. Just read all the horror stories of trying to get out of Namezero...
Anyway, Namezero offers free domains, but if you want to keep it after the first year, you have to signup for Namezero Plus which is $24.99/yr. I think domainzero offers a similar plan. I think your best bet for a free domain would be to get a com.kg, net.kg, org.kg, or edu.kg from domain.kg. It takes a few days/weeks to get setup properly, but it is free, and no advertisments are placed on your page.

If you are getting a domain, then I'll assume you either have a decent site now, or are planning to build one that you care about. If this is the case, then don't skimp on the only way people are going to be able to view the site. I recommend you pay for the domain at a inexpensive registrar.

both domainzero & namedemo are closed down.
Namezero only offers a free "trial" which means u have to buy your domain from THEM if u want to keep it (else they will register it anyway and try to sell it to someone else). But cheap regsitrars are 9$/y ... and namezero is 24.95$/y ... so even with 1 free year itz more expensive then 9$x2
And about emeisp , itz hard to get in , hard to get out (special transfer costs) and ****ing boring pop-ups ... better pay just 9$ and get a "real" domain.
try : godaddy , powerpipe , ...

Take a *.*.kg, *.*.ar, *.*.ru or (*).*.eu.org and search the forum. I posted a lot about these subdomains.

Albert, where do I get .ar subs? The forum search doesn't seem to work yet. *.ar didn't turn up anything, not even this thread. ;)

It is NOT easy to register at http://www.nic.ar/ You must understand Spanish a little bit and even if your mother tongue is Spanish (a friend of mine is from South America) sometimes it is hard to understand what they want you to fill out in some fields.
I suggest, get a *.*.ar if you have a homepage re: Argentina or at least re: South America, otherwise forget it. The registration is checked manually.
I tried a *.net.ar and got the answer:
"El requerimiento de Registro de Nombre de Dominio para el dominio de la referencia no ha sido procesado.
Ent. Reg.: NET.AR: Prestadores de Servicios de V. Agregado registrados en SeCom."
I didn't find any notice during the whole registration process, that you have to be a registered ISP. They should make a notice like this, if you start with the registration of a *.net.ar.
Unfortunately the com.ar-version of my desired domain was taken, so I didn't try anymore.
I helped my friend from South America to register a *.org.ar and as far as I remember it took about 2 weeks until he was accepted. (The topic of his homepage is Argentina-related)
Please note too: They ask you for your passpart no. and you have to answer a few questions in Spanish. If you answer these questions don't use special characters for the Spanish language like с or у a.s.o. There are few other strange things, but I don't remember what it was.
So if you still like to register go to: http://www.nic.ar/forms.htm and forget http://www.nic.ar/indexeng.htm or http://www.nic.ar/formseng.htm. The pages in English don't help you very much. At the end you have to understand Spanish.

Thanks! Better go for sub.kg from the sound of it. I still suffer from the psychological effects of trying to register a sub.ru.

I don't remember the procedure exactly. Was last autumn. I used the utility one of the guys here have (woofcat??). I managed step one, whatever that was, and got some confirmation. Step two (actually registering the name?) was a no go. Something about wrong handle I think. I was at it a week and then I went into an asylum and now I'm back.
Tell me of you succeed and be sure to record every step in the procedure! :D

from the sign up notes
nserver:
The field contains information on domain name servers (DNS) supporting the domain being delegated.
Server information includes server name and, if server name contains the name of domain being delegated, it also includes the IP-address of the server or the list of server IP addresses, separated by commas.
...
At least two of the servers listed should be located in different IP nets (in different C class nets in traditional terms) and have a reliable Internet connection.
my name servers are
AAA.BBB.CCC.4
AAA.BBB.CCC.5
so I fail on this. How would I get another name server? in fact is there some good info on nameservers and how they fit in as up till now they seemed quite straightforward.

.*.kg was much easier about 20mins all in though a little wait for it to be live :D
this .*.ru is more of a challenge - question is do I really need one or am I just domain collecting?

i'm currently too lazy to make a webpage. But you can check it out at: www.jacklepop.com
Somehow, i don't even know if i still will be able to use the domain at all. Guess i'm back at -------- redirection =D

What do I know? I thought VAT was an UK thing.
Now I'm worried they won't let me keep my registered sub or register any new since I'm of course not going to pay.
Anyone else got their invoices?

Don't remember exactly. I got through the first part without problems (registering myself?). They sent me some blah-blah plus a couple of handles I should use in step two. I did, but they kept telling me they weren't valid.

I would tell them that there is a general problem with their registration system. Everyone can register a domain for anyone else. There is also no option to cancel a domain, if you mistyped the ID and notice it, after the domain is already registered. They should force you to enter your ID-password, when you register, as it is with the domain-modification.
Maybe they can check ip-adresses and see that the registration came from different countries or something like this.
Probably, it was one of the newbies, who heard that kg-domains are free, but never read the homepage before registration.

No. I registered for an .org.kg and they try to bill me for a .kg that I've never heard of. I'm just wondering if this is something they do regularly to scam people for money or if it's just a one time mistake.

I said it already in other words. It is possible to register a kg-domain with an ID, which belongs to anyone, not yourself. And that is a general problem. You are not asked for the password of the ID, which you fill out, when you register a domain, but you are asked twice, if you modify a domain.
So it doesn't count if you registered the domain, you are billed because anyone used your ID. In the case of a 3rd-level-domain this is not a big problem really, but with 2nd-level-domains this security hole can be misused too. Let's say one is looking for some free 3rd-level-domains and find them occupied by a domain-squatter. If that person is evil or/and silly, he could register a big number of 2nd-level-kg-domains for this person, for which the domain squatter would be billed.
I wonder that there were not more postings, that someone got a bill for a domain which he never registered.
And I believe you should write kg the scenario.
BTW I use all my kg-domains (in the meantime about 20) and I was not billed.

Yes, I misunderstood you. I did write to the email address at the site too. You are right. They need to add at least a pw to that routine.

Get your free *.*.ru domains there, meow.
I didn't take the time to read all the ---- that's there, though... because I'm not interested in *.*.ru domains.

I got a free .kg domain once. From what I remember, I mistook it for a .**.kg. Three days later, I got a billing invoice. I ignored it and the name still worked months later. I finally cancelled it, had no use for it and did not want to push my luck.
