when you multiply 2 numbers you get 98, when you add them you get 21

whats the y=bla equation for this simple problem :)

xXy = 98
x+y = 21

i think..

when you multiply 2 numbers you get 98, when you add them you get 21

whats the y=bla equation for this simple problem :)

xy = 98
x + y = 21

y = 21 - x, thus
x(21 - x) = 98

21x - x^2 = 98 -> x^2 - 21x + 98 = 0

factored:
(x - 14)(x - 7) = 0

x = 14, 7

and thus:
with x = 14 -> y = 21 - 14 = 7
with x = 7 -> y = 31 - 7 = 14

Answers are x = 14, y = 7 and y = 7 and x = 14

I just guessed and checked. Atlas did it the smart way.

I love guess and check, but now that I am beyond calculus it doesn't usually work

sometimes i guess on those integral problems where you have to find the volume of an irregular object. it is fun but i get 17s and 26s on my quizzes.

Wow... I remember doing that crap...

O I am so very glad Im not in skool anymore!

If you dig this forum, you'll learn I failed Russian. ;)
And since russian lvl1 wasnt available in the next semester I could not sign up for the next semester, thus, had to stay home.
Stupid college policies.

But, college here in quebec isnt the same as college in the states.
We have:
6 years grade school
5 years high school
2 or 3 years of college (3 career, 2 pre-university)
3+ years of university

I couldn't resist. ;)

Wojtek, you got kicked out just because you failed Russian? Are all colleges like that? If that applies to my school, I would've had two years of vacation. :p
