Ok, basically I got a big computer hardware site who's account has been terminated and, well, to make a long story short we're looking for another host.
Requirements (constantly increasing):
150mb space
unique IP
FTP
at least 5x pop3 email accounts
full support for: CGI, PHP, Perl, SSI
Here's the killer: we need about 250gb/month bandwidth!
What's the lowest price you can give?
Also, since our server is down our email server is offline as well, so if you got an idea please send it to:
ivanenea@email.uc.edu
or
mikhailtech@yahoo.com

Thanks,
please let me know ASAP this is URGENT!!!!!!!

And yes, I said 250gb/month. We're getting about 3000 visitors per day (sometimes peaking around 7000), a number that keeps going up. Most of our articles are reviews with lots of pictures, so 1 page = 1mb. Average 2 page views per visitor = 250,000 page views/month x 1mb/page = 250gb. Boo!

I'd expect to pay about $400 for this site. Not sure wht you are thinking but virtual shared servers might be out on this one. Even though the traffic is due to images, it is quite a bit of traffic.

Taking a look at the "standard" package, does the "unmetered website data transfer" = unlimited bandwidth? And have you ever heard of this place?

it means unlimited bandwidth and it don't exist. :)
Best you can do is get a server at efreeservers.com

200 GB Bandwidth for
$300 a month

What do you mean "it don't exist"? The unlimited bandwidth (duh) or the actual service? We need a relatively cheap (under $50/month) host right now, we can work out kinks later but now moving is the top priority. So my next question is this: are these guys legit? And what kind of support can I expect?

Anyone offering unlimited space or bandwidth is definatly questionable. If you have a look at there fine print in the terms of service you will most deffinatly find something there or they will get you later and charge you a few thousand on your bill. I would deffinatly suggest going with a dedicated server as going with a virtual server you are sure to use up a lot of resources. Good luck.

All that for $50 Per Month?

Are You Crazy!

Sheesh to host that site it would cost around $200 per month with the high bandwidth........

Try a dedicated server from 4webspace.com

And then if you need more bandwidth just pay the extra $3 per gig

Prohosting claim unmetered bandwidth. There are certain conditions attatched.

From prohosting

Unmetered data transfer
This means that there are no bandwidth limits on your site. You can get as many hits as you like and there will be no additional charge for it as long as it is just a standard set of web pages. If your site contains a software archive which consumes excessive bandwidth, extra charges may apply, however, we will always inform you before charging your account.

Actually their $100 dedicated RaQ3 server package looks nice but I'm thinking of something else. $100 is a bit steep. Basically now I'm trying to get a low-cost virtual host. Sometime this summer I'm gonna beg some contacts here at the University of Cincinnati to let me run a dedicated server (at my house) off their T1 line. Or maybe we'll just get a co-host. We'll see, but for now this is what we need. Actually I already signed up for DPN, only fine print I found on bandwidth is that if it gets to be a real hassle we'll have 5 days to take our site elsewhere. So far we're going for the $10/month plan, so if we get kicked from there it won't be too much of a problem, provided we're notified on time. Thanks for the help guys, but for future reference I'm still looking for suggestions, probably dedicated/coop hosting.

Wishing you the best but just have to make a comment since their Features page is just so (ummmm, what's the word?)...

Quote from site:
Web Site Data Transfer
Data transfer is the amount of data that may be transmitted from your account on any given month. We offer unmetered data transfer and we do not have any active limits on our customers. This is a bonus, most other providers limit your data transfer to 500Mb - 1GB per month. With DPN you do not have to worry about these silly limits which are usually brought on by web hosting resellers that do not have the resources to support there customers.

Talk about silly limits! I mean what host *wouldn't* allow their OC12 to be fully utilized by a $5/mo account? Whooo, those other silly hosts.

Consider that an OC3 (let alone an OC12) runs in the neighborhood of $30,000/mo, it just makes sense that you could get unmetered, unlimted bandwidth for $5/mo now doesn't it?

As for your begging some the University of Cincinnati to let you run a dedicated server off their T1 line... note that a T1 is only capable of pushing about 450 Gigs/mo maxed out completely (ie: slow at this point), and runs over $800/mo. so if you can convince them to let you use over 1/2 the capacity of the entire line, I'd be surprised.

Please note, I'm not trying to shoot down every idea you have (as it probably sounds), rather just discuss some of the physical limitations and costs of what you are dealing with. In magic host land, bandwidth is free and unlimited, but in real life, there are technical limitations and costs associated with these things.

Maybe I was mistaken about our bandwidth needs (how to figure our for sure?). Did some more #'s and maybe we only need 50/month. Don't know for sure. At any rate, they said they give 5 days notice if they kick you so even if we do get booted it won't be abrupt like it was now.

A little off topic, how long does it usually take for a DNS to update?

Thanks guys, everything seems to be up. Well, not from this end, but I know what the problem is and it's being taken care of. Anyway, one of our sponsors is also an ISP provider and they've agreed to host us free of charge (on their own dedicated server + 45mb fiber optics line). We probably won't move over to that server for another month or so (have to work out some kinks, etc), but so far DPN (the sponsor of this forum category) has been really nice and fast about setting things up. Would definitely recommend them, at least as of right now.....

Thanks for the help guys, it's much appreciated...
