depends on the way you look at it.

If your hotlinking numerous pictures/design/images/etc off some other site for your own site, then yes, this can be considered as theft.
But in this thread poeple are showcasing phones wich is nothing different then if you'd show a printed ad to someone.

Ive only seen it used in this thread. It will naturally be abused in a thread that says the img is finally enabled. I havent seen it used in any other thread yet.

... except when they are on somebody else's server who has to pay for the bandwidth. If they dont want people linking from their images then they could stop it.

Nope, i dont. I purposely enabled hot-linking. Hotlinking for my personal websites are disabled.
