Prevo advertises $4.95/mo., no set up fee, no banners, no minimum contract.
http://www.prevo.net/
(My present host is far more expensive, offers many sevices I don't use, and has weak tech support.) In a get what you pay for world, is The Prevo Network worth trying for hosting a small site?

I am not sure is this a spam, but I think it violates the rules here.

I hear they are good (fast servers) but you won't get customer support on the weekend.

Thanks for the replies. (I e-mailed Prevo with questions and got a prompt response.) I have never switched hosts before and need all the help I can get. I am wondering, being a newbie at this, if I will be able to easily switch my site to an inexpensive host like Prevo, or do I, in fact, need a more expensive host. (The host with the ad on this page, for example, has a set up fee.)
As you know, rates for hosting are all over the place. As a businessman, I know that "you get what you pay for," so I am naturally suspicious of what, on the surface, appears to be a very good deal. (But I don't need to pay extra for services that I won't use, like I am wil my present host.)
To Donovan: I don't mean to violate the rules. I am new at this. What did I do (or say) wrong to make you think my post was spam? I first heard of Prevo at the HostSpot forum a couple of days ago, but there wasn't much feedback there. I wanted to hear what you guys thought, so I just joined FreeWebspace to make my post. The webmaster of another forum recommended your forum. It appears to be a very good one.

I think you would be fine with Prevo. Actually, the changing of hosts is not that difficult. I'd recommend having them set you up with a temporary domain address so that you can put your site together with no down time. Then make the move of transfering your domain (takes a couple of days). Finally, cancel your old host after the domain fully transfers.
Go for it.... pretty soon you will be changing hosts every couple of months like the rest of us. :D

One more thing... nothing against the sponsor of this page but with so many good choices these days, you don't need to be paying a set up fee to get a good host.

It's not hard to change a host. You just need to change your domain's DNS info (if you have any) to your new host's nameservers, and transfer all your files over there. And you are done. Some hosts transfer your files for you without a charge but I am not sure whether Prevo do this or not.
Prevo has been around for quite sometimes, so I think you won't be having big problem with them.
By the way, thomas, you didn't do or say anything wrong. Just my mistake for not reading your post in details. Sorry...

To jiminsd: Thanks for you encouragement. Your post was the best news I've heard on switching hosts. My present (soon to be previous) host tries to intimidate me into thinking I'm not capable of finding better service for less money.
To Donovan: Thanks for your reply. (I thought I had done something to offend.)
How do I find out what my " domain's DNS info" is? I do not know if my domain has this info or not. Thanks for making a host transfer sound so easy.

Mind telling us who your current host is? :D

You must go to your registrar to do this and log in under the name and password that you set up with them. Check with the new host (they often post it somewhere on their site or give it to you when you sign up) for their name server info that you will set your domain to with the registrar. Then set the new hosts info and it will take a couple of days for the actual change to happen.
If your going with Prevo, email them, they can help you with this.

If you want to know your current DNS info, try searching with Register.com or Internic.net's system. I think they could be in a little help.
To change your DNS info, simply e-mail your registrar, or maybe you can log in a control panel to change it. Telling us who is your registrar can help us to tell you the ways.
By the way, I am not making it sounds so easy. It's really that easy. They should be guiding you all the way when you joined them. It's really easy for all the things. You just need 3 days for your DNS info to be updated, and maybe 5 minutes or more for your host to move your files depending for your host. I think most hosts can finish this within 5 minutes if you don't have a large site.

Fast servers are true, but
Mention of the no customer service on weekend is not true. I work on the server more during the weekend than during the week.
My policy is a return email within 24 to 48 hours. As a buffer "Just in case" anything would come up.
90% of the time they are responded alot sooner than this. I believe in being honest with people. I will never pretend and offer something I can't and never offer unlimited anything. Offer unlimited, then something happens and you can't live up to the promise, then guess what? Bye-Bye customers.
I reply to emails right as they come in, emails are checked several times a day and non-stop in the evening at my own home with a lan connection.
Their may be an weekend every now and then I may not be in, but that is not very often.
You may have wrote me on the weekend and got a auto-responder, that my have been one weekend I was gone.
If I am out I do set a auto responder to let people know when I will be returning. My server is monitored at the data center and I monitor it remotely. It is just curtious to let people know you are not in.
Not trying to start anything here, I just wanted to speak for this. My hosting business is my livelyhood and my customers and potential customers come first. The gentelman that started the posted here, I am taking care of him as we speak. He may be back to rave about me. He is in no way employed or a owner with my company.

Oh that is no problem, I just wanted you and others to be aware of it, no hard feelings or anything. I have learned to not take anything personal, esp. on the net. I just didn't want others to draw a bad opinion of my service as most offen that one negative can do more harm than good.
To bad we live in a negative world. At least we can do our part to make it better.
I have not been a regular on this message board, but I sure like this message board, the responses I see here have been polite and informative.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. Although I made contact with several qualified hosts during my search for a new one, I decided to transfer the hosting of my web site to the Prevo Network. This was not a hard decision. Prevo met all my needs--and exceeded my expectations.
Being somewhat of a business cynic (and after my experience with my previous host), I actually expected a negative glitch to occur. It never did.
I have a lot to learn. And maybe Prevo's excellent service is standard in this market of reasonably priced hosts. But I am pleasantly surprised as to how well I have been treated for the price I am paying. Prevo's president, L. James Prevo, helped me through every step of the transfer process. Later he sent me mini CDs of my web site files, WS_FTP (a FTP program), and 1st Page 2000 (a freeware web site design program by Evrsoft)--all at no additional cost to me. My experience with this company, so far, has been completely positive.
Check out my web site at www.thomaspeckham.com. I have a long way to go compared to other sites I am seeing, but now that I have a decent host, I can devote energy to further improvements. Any suggestions on that?
