Another saga in my quest with Win98 or is it just going through PMS again?
Yesterday after playing around on a game (that's been installed for at least a year...no troubles)I was surfing the internet, then looked at my taskbar and
everything in the tray WASNT THERE!.
I've tried putting the same stuff in startup, and I checked my registry (hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\current(?)\Ru n) and the keys are in there but when I start the machine up they don't load. I press CTRL+ALT+DEL and the only thing running is explorer.
Anyone have any solutions? I'm both of these...but mainly this:
I don't want to reinstall windows.

Mine does that all the time. After Program Error(usually IE), all the task bar icons go bye bye. The program is still running though.
Ha HA HA. I hate win 98 too. I'm installing Win2k sometime soon, and all the win98 problems are gone. Yeah, hope so. It's got the same stupid features though, Active Desktop to name one piece o' shyte. Yeah.

Ok. Now I know what you are talking about. Its common with me too because my computer screws up every couple of minutes. You can make the icon reappear by restarting the program

wow every couple of minutes, better than most

I've had problems where if somethign dies then sometimes it would make everything on the tray vanish. Now something screwed up so no matter what I do nothing appears on the tray (when I boot up)_ and the startup folder doesn't work. GRRR>. If I manually do everything the programs will start and then I have to "configure" ok ok ok options and then they'll appear on the tray.
I "partilally reinstalled" win98 so I got scheduler that would come up on the tray so that launches all the programs I need to.
Anyway, This sumemr I guess I'll ahve to format my computer and do clean install.

Perhaps a program in your startup is crashing and killing everything else in your tray?
That program would be IE. Mine does that a lot too. IE performs some illegal error, closes, and then all my system tray icons goes bye bye, but the programs stilll runs. It doesn't really matter, doesn't affect anything.
There's one simple solution you can do without restarting - Logout from the start menu.

Upgrade to Windows Millenium... I've been using it for six months now and never had that problem.

windows Me
I've got it yes less crashes but lots of programs don't work - well some I would like to use anyway. It's not compatable with some hardware I want to use so I'm going back to 98 when I have a spare day or 2
win 98 is a standard that new windows ops will use - they'll pretend to be win 98 - if this happens is another thing
I'm just dreaming about mving over to linux if only all the software I use didn't need windows .....:(

I have an install for Linux Mandrake (a coincidence as I didn't even know it existed when I chose this handle), but there are too many apps that I use that are Windows only and I don't want to waste space by having two different OS's.

True
trapped into one OS.
My server is linux and It'd be nice to have it a home so it doesn't matter if I break it ;)

Maybe you should try 98Lite? I hear all problems go away and you get a faster and more stable system.

I'm on win95. They're very hot on 98Lite on a couple of lists I'm on. There's a free trial, I think. When and if I install 98 I'm sure gonna get it.
A warning about IEradicator from the same guys though. It ----ed up my machine (probably because it was already a mess) and I heard about someone that had a catastrophe with it. So don't use it if you aren't backed up properly. Most are very happy with IEradicator too, though.

How is there a free trial on 98lite? Does it put all that junk back onto your system after 30 days?

Excuuuuuuse me! Perhaps trial is the wrong word.
It isn't time limited, it's feature limited. As I understand it, it lets you break the desktop integration + some other stuff.

Kind of funny: When i tried to reply to this thread a minute ago IE crashed
Aside from that, instead of tolerating the feature limited version why not buy it, or (pretend i didn't say this) turn to warez.
Who actually bought Windows? I got my copy from a friend who has this CD.................

G. wasn't referring to Windows.
I think 98Lite can be hard to find on the "open market". And I can say this since I'm on win95 so I couldn't use the warez even if I had it. :D

My IBM came with this stupid version of Windows 98 that adds a ton of junk onto your system. Yes, even more than Windows 98 already is... You might think it's impossible, but it's true. Thank God for Windows 2000!

*slaps forehead* Right... how could I forget? :o
Well, this computer my dad bought, it came with Win 3.1, see? So we had to get ourselves a Win95 and later the Win98 CD, so I uh... !confused!???
Never mind, I'm just blabbing who knows what...

My parents did... well for like $25. lol. ANYWAY. My stupid computer is working again. I had to log off then back in twice, then log off and then log in as "somethign else" than it was.. seems to work now. Thank you whoever suggested the "logoff" feature :) I hope MS gets smart and makes something GOOD instead of buggy and crappy and then trying to produce another buggy and crappy OS in a hurry after they produced the first one.

That non-buggy OS must be Windows 2000. Actually, Win2K is very buggy, but it just doesn't seem to show it.

I don't think you can say that. Some of the bugs must have been fixed, no?

I mentioned that. Read my post more carefully. Windows 2000 has tons of bugs, but you don't really seem to trigger them as much as you find them in Windows 98.

Is there really much difference between win98 and win2000?And would gaming with win2000 be much better?Performance and speed would be my main need, well and a good graphics accelerator I guess.
Games won't run "better" on Win2k... in fact, you'll have to worry about games being able to run at all before you get to wondering if it will run better. :)
some of the new games will run almost as good, 2% difference, but you'll have some troubles with older games. quake 3 arena runs pretty darn well under win2k.. I wouldn't downgrade myself to win98 just for games since win2k is becoming a more viable gaming platforms, and the stability is worth it...
microsoft has a compatibility patch for older games, and they update this patch every few month
http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...pat/default.asp
I was too cheap to buy the retail version of Win2K pro since its extremely expensive, and they wouldn't sell me the OEM version since microsoft states that the OEM version must be sold with a new system. there is a trick however, in that you are allowed to buy the OEM version if you buy a hard drive with it.. so I bought a 15GB hard drive, and an OEM copy of Win2k pro, which works out to be cheaper than the retail version plus a I get a new hard drive to tinker around with

Isn't there an upgrade pack for upgrading from earlier versions?

Normal business, websurfing applications and such are faster in Windows 2000 than in Windows 98. However, gaming performance is faster in 98.
